What with Haloween around the corner, just though I'd let you all know about my favourite festival which is probably bigger over here than Haloween and just a few days later, Guy Fawkes or Bonfire night. Its the day we celebrate a plot by a bunch of Catholics, Guy Fawkes being the one who got caught first but not the leader, being discovered to blow up Parliment in the early 1600s. We celebrate it by having a big bonfire with an effigy of Guy Fawkes on the top and letting off a load of fireworks. The huge Harlow one is only a couple of hundred metres from my door, over 20,000 people usually turn up and £20,000 worth of fireworks are let off. I also add to the occassion by having my mates round to get drunk before and afterward and watch the film V for Vendetta. All school kids here know off by heart the song -
Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason,
Should ever be forgot!
A few videos about this -
This is what happened when an accurate as possible reconstruction of what would have happened was done -
