Black President

You have to also keep in mind that England is much older than the US so you have had more time to eliminate the stereotypes that may have been responsible for keeping your country down. Hopefully, we are crossing that threshold now but it's too early to tell.

My impression is that the English may be just as prejudice when it comes to immigrants. It's an issue happening right now in that country. They don't want those damn feriners taking their jobs for half the wage. A pretty common feeling when immigrants enter a once homogenous society. It might be economic alarm that fuels the hostility. When i was growing up, we had a couple of English families living next to us (living in Maryland) and they sounded just as bigoted as the local bigots when it came to African Americans. BTW, I'm not implying that all English are bigots, I'm just saying I don't know how much more advanced they are in this area as a society. Maybe Peter can enlighten me.

yeah, you get racial tension in certain areas, mainly where the East European immigrants settle. Of course the media does its best to make the problem worse by exagerating and using loads of buzz words to stir people up. Racism against blacks was a lot more common 20-30 odd years ago but dosent seem nearly as bad these days, probably more to do with people being used to them now and having new races to hate. Also Black people seem to have intergrated themselves better into local communities unlike the Asians who tend to keep themselves to themself and not mix with white people.

immigration has nothing at all to do with presidential candidates or colour........back to obama please

So when did England last elect a Black Prime Minister?

We haven't had the choice... mind you we didn't even ELECT our current prime minister - he's there because of a cosy agreement over bruschetta mozzarella.

Was listening to Radio 4 this morning: damn auto-tuning car radio: but they were talking about the feminist icon that Hilary Clinton has apparently become and was aware that the sex and the colour of the candidates is all anyone is thinking about - why can't it be about the actual person? Crazy as it seems but sometimes the policies and ideas might be worth listening to.

A black president or a female president - doesnt matter as its about the job they are doing and the promises and manifesto they are delivering.

However - that's the view of the more enlightened I feel and unfortunately every politician has to pander to the masses: who in america are being told to care about race and sex.

Not sure if I really answered thr question but I hope america is ready... it would be sad if it's proved they are not.

Ya, your guyses veiw over there is way different then it is here, well at least for me. I really never even thought about the race or gender of those two candidates, I just like Obama's policies more, plus I'm a girl so you would think that if I did care, I would of chosen Hillary, but, I don't like universal health care.

Obama isn't black.

Most likely he's <50% black. But to some, one drop of black blood is enough to be labeled.

You are right, it was a hurtful remark.

Dear primates of the world,

I am deeply sorry for comparing you to our idiotic president. It was below the belt and I regret it with all my heart.

All my love, Gilli

:24: Yeah take it easy on the primates.
