Eric Johnson? (cliffs of dover)
Steve Howe?(roundabout)
Steve Hackett?(firth of fifth)

Misters Clapton, Page, Van Halen, Vai, Iommi, are without question exempted from this because they ARE rock Gods.....

The best solo I ever saw was at Shepherds Bush in 2006, Mr Jeff Beck was playing a yellow strat, and I couldn't see any FX pedals anywhere, and I was pretty close to the action, and he was just creating some of the most unique and innovative sounds out of a guitar I have ever heard.
The song I think was 'Nadia', but it just blew me away.

However for best studio solo there's a song called Tuesday Morning and Molten Gold by Paul Kossoff (guitarist from Free) and the licks there are unbelievable. Learn just a few, nail them, and impress your friends.

Honourable mention of course to people like Santana, Song of the Wind & Black Magic Woman especially.

But here's a video of my first mentionee, not the same song because I couldn't a version that came close on youtube to what I witnessed, but this one ain't bad:
YouTube - Jeff Beck - Brush with the blues

And here's a true guitar genius that anyone for anyone who likes Blues and Rock
YouTube - Rory Gallagher - Bullfrog Blues (1976)

honestly there are sooooo many to chose from. countless,
but i have to say that MY FAVE guitar solo in a song would have to be

the Slash solo in SWEET CHILD OF MINE (Guns N Roses)

YouTube - slash solo sweet child o mine
FF: 0:57

followed by Randy Rhoads solo in BARK AT THE MOON (Ozzy Osbourne)

LOVELOVELOVE GN'R. But..not that song. :(

I liked it in the 80's when it debuted.
But...now "You Could Be Mine" "Mr. Brownstone" & "Jungle" are my all times favs. And I could play "Don't Cry" about 35313455641231 times in a row. I think I have...

K, back to guitars!
