+1 for AVG. It is free for home users (not commercially) and is as good as most paid for anti-virus packages. Only problem is that is can be resource intensive so if you don't have a decent computer then use a lighter AV package. MSE is a good option and free as well (Microsoft Essentials). You can install it via Windows Update.

I'm using ESET NOD at this very moment, and having tried a bunch of other ones I can say this one is the best I've ever had!
Really protective, simple and so light on the process, it really boosted my computer performance unlike the others like avast, avg, norton...

Always used norton untill I got my newest PC. It's Win8 and came with a install disk for webroot and I have to say that I think it may be the best I've used to date. It's not too much protection like some AV's but it's enough to keep me safe. It's perfect in my opinion.

I've used a plethora of antiVirus programs, but the majority of them are far too clunky. On my Win7 PC I found that the best one was Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). It doesn't take up too much RAM when it runs in the background, and it works perfectly. AVG is great too, but I would definitely recommend trying out MSE for those looking for something new.

I tested about a dozen of them or so about 3 years ago..with a virtual machine.
The three that stood out.
Kaspersky.
Eset
Bitdefender.

Kaspersky protected itself from being disabled....rock solid..in a day or two as new definitions keep coming out and it updated it would kill the infection..it was ready to rock again.
Bitdefender had slightly better detection that the other two...but was easily crippled when undetected malware hit it.
Eset...was a pretty good product...falling in between the two ..and a very good choice.
As said this was about three years ago though....things may be different now.
I use MSE now...and a sandbox for "not so sure" files.
Sandboxie is free...rock solid...and also kept everything contained that I threw at it.

Avast Anti-virus. It's not annoying, doesn't throw any special lights asking you to buy program X and doesn't come loaded with junkware. Nice and simple, I love it and have been using it for 3 years. The free version is pretty good, and I think that the salience isn't too bad. On the downside, it's loud as hell when you visit a website hosting malware or when "VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED".

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and I've been fine since two years ago when I installed my PC. Never had any malware or virus infection yet, and I can guarantee you that MSE is all you need (along with a brain for smart browsing). A lot of other antivirus programs hog memory resources and slow down your PC, but MSE is built by Microsoft, is lightweight, and consumes little system resources. I strongly suggest you guys to use it over other antiviruses as it does a great job. Best of all, it's FREE if you have windows.
