Predatory recruiting methods?? :confused

Action and adventure and loads of fun.
They'll even teach you how to shoot a gun.
Room and board and pay to boot.
You even get a tailored business suit.

:24:
They lure people in with the promise of various monetary things like college money and the sort, medical etc etc etc and they often fall short of those promises or don't lend them at all. This has been documented for a very long time.

Then it should be easy to prove. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Oh my goodness. Maybe we should get our recruits from a 'Down's Syndrome' Center like al Qaeda does.

God forbid we promise to pay our military and offer them college money or health care! :eek

For starters, not a single one of those articles mention your claims about lying about college and medical care. Except for this one:
Deceptions in Military Recruiting: An ex-Insider Speaks Out.

This was written by an " ex-Marine
infantryman with experience as a recruiter-assistant." You know what Recruiter's Assistance is? It's a 2-week stint immediately following boot camp when you help a recruiter. I've never heard of it lasting more than 17 days. This hardly qualifies the person to write the article. Among many other falsehoods in that article, he says the starting pay is $700 a month, which can quickly be disproven through Google. I believe it's around $1250 a month now.

And do you even read the links you post? These 2:
Military Recruiters Lie About Dangers In Iraq - Cincinnati News Story - WLWT Cincinnati
Military Recruiters Lie About Dangers In Iraq
Are the EXACT same article, from 2 different places. The EXACT same article.

Several of these articles:
Recruiting At Any Cost: How The Pentagon Keeps The New Recruits Coming
Army Recruiters Face Investigation, Caught On Tape: Recruiters Seemingly Helping 'Prospect' Lie - CBS News
are about recruiters encouraging recruits to lie so they can get in. This isn't "predatory recruiting". For example, if a Marine recruiter knows any long-term drug history will disqualify a recruit, is it wrong for him to say "Hey, if you want to get in, you have to say you only smoked pot twice". Sure, it's a lie. But the recruiter can't force them to say it and sign the papers. It's mutually beneficial. The recruit wants in, the recruiter tells him how to do it.

This site:
truth-in-recruiting
is referring to the Inactive Reserve. Every enlistment is for 8 years. 4 or 5 of those years are Active Duty, and the rest are Inactive Reserve. The IR doesn't do anything. All it means is that in the event of an emergency, they can recall you during those 3 or 4 years.

This site:
The lies recruiters tell
Makes a bunch of outstanding claims, but doesn't provide a shred of proof to back them up. For instance "They also tell prospective recruits that they can request a specific job or specialty in the military--which they can, but the military is under no obligation to honor these requests, and usually doesn’t." You can't just say that without backing it up. Prove to me they usually don't honor the MOS they guarantee. The only way I've ever seen someone not get their MOS was if they dropped out of the school.

I know this is difficult for you to comprehend, but some people actually WANT to join the military.

My boyfriend once told me when he was in high school and first talked to a navy recruiter the guy pulled out a stack of photos featuring naked women at nude beaches and told him if he joined up, he will get to see this on a regular basis. :24:

Oh, I know there's people that want to join the military. But the articles I posted point to some common misconceptions recruiters use.

You didn't say there are many common misconceptions about military service. You said:

They lure people in with the promise of various monetary things like college money and the sort, medical etc etc etc and they often fall short of those promises or don't lend them at all. This has been documented for a very long time.

And you have absolutely failed to back up the part I bolded. Show me one single example of someone on Active Duty who either:

a) was denied free medical care

or

b) was denied Tuition Assistance (the program which pays for 100% of a servicemembers tuition)

There was actually something on that very issue on CNN about 6 months ago. I'll look for some more.

:24::24::24: I almost have tears in my eyes that's so funny!! How could any self respecting newspaper print that?!

Whelp... discussion's over folks. :jk

Geez.... Poor Ron's belief system is under major assault here these last few weeks. Proof of life creation, poor people being overtaxed, and now military abuse... I'm telling you, we're gonna drag him to the center if it kills us.

lol.

I went through a period where I was looking to join the Marines. I know quite a few US military people. All of them told me too look out for the recruiters. Some of them didn't want me to talk to a recruiter about anything without them present. It's common knowledge obviously, that they use shady tactics to recruit young people.

You can talk about them having rules in which to follow, but so what? Everyone in every profession breaks rules to better their own position. If you think Marines are immune to it, think again.

And all you have to do is enter some variation of of these words "Marine", "Recruiter", "Lies" into a google search and you will find pages upon pages of links to articles written about this.

Fact is, some recruiters are scum.

The federal money that would be taken away is mostly to fund programs for children. Punish the children, that'll show 'em.
