Technically, the Pine Tar game ended with George Brett's HR, so it couldn't be played under protest because the game ended :24:

Actually, if the homer had been allowed it would have ended it.
However, as it didn't the Royals took the field after the homer by protest. That's the out the commish had.

I don't think that's actually the case... because the game was in New York, the out ended the game with the Yankees winning 4-3. But the Royals did immediately protest the game, unlike the Tigers in this case.

Good point.

Interesting note... Goose Gossage, the pitcher in question, was later asked to sign the ball.

He signed it: "Barry, I threw the fucking thing." :24:

but when is a game never turned on one play that makes all the difference? teams feel gipped on strike calls and base running blunders (like the one last night) although this was a "perfect" game, you have to really think of it this way, if MLB allows replay the game has to make a fine line as to what is reviewable or it will go by the NFL, reviewing and scrutinizing every nuance.....

In this instance the next batter made an out

The game results were not impacted other than the single error by the ump which was the last play and action of the game

UPDATE: Selig has stated that he will NOT overturn the call.
i still see this a big mistake on his part, i think he could have and should have, it is not necessarily a precedent setter as he could site exceptional circumstances, above all it would have done him a lot of good in the PR stakes with fans, which he sorely needs

one thin often missed in all of this is the behaviour of Gallaraga, he has been a model pro

QFT.

I would go further and say the worst of ANY sport at any time.

He's ruined America's greatest game.

Nah Gary Bettman has him beat

Bud is a tool but not in the category of Bettman

Selig blew an opportunity here. I think it is bull shit for anybody say it would set a precedent. How many friggin times do you have a perfect game ruined by the last play of the game when the call was so blatantly obviously wrong? He could have worded this decision in a way that makes it as precedent setting as me winning the lottery because my neighbor did.

And SO FUCKING WHAT if it sets a precendent? Didn't Kennesaw Mountain Landis set one when he banned the Black Sox for life? Didn't Ford Frick set one by forcing the league to accept Jackie Robinson? Didn't Bowie Kuhn set one by allowing the DH? What about Giamatti for banning a player for something he did years AFTER playing? The precendent that Selig will be remembered for is breaking the cardinal rule of collusion between owners and the commisioners office by accepting the title while still running his own team. He allowed the foxes into the henhouse. Way to go. Look how great THAT'S been for baseball.

Precendents are needed, not to be avoided.
