baseball - proof that umps are human

major league baseball is almost too good for instant replay. the old boy network allows for things just as this. the integrity of the game is that things happen in the blink of an eye and they can be missed. this game can be killed because of this. until recently MLB used human judgment to make their decisions. but i remember in game six of the 2004 ALCS where they had two "conferences" on two very game changing moments. why didn't they do that tonight?...once again, judgment call...and that ump will be labeled for the rest of his life as the one who let one slip away. and you can be assured that Detroit will not let him forget either. and the pitcher of the Tigers, said he forgave him for his blown call, class act.

wonder if having seen the tape the ump fesses up and says i blew it and thye change the records to reflect the perfect game

bee good PR though, almost allowing the ump to say sorry, there is already enough bad relationships between skippers and umps (Guillen from the White Sox recently got fined along with an Ump (West?) for gettiing into it

more importantly the games image with the fans, sick of the steroid era, sick of the arrogance from the likes of A-Rod

would just be cool to see

but then again there is Selig, when did he ever do the right thing

I watched that happen live last night. It is huge in the news today\

The umpire is devastated. He admitted after seeing the replay that he blew the call.

MLB should over rule it as it was the last play of the game.

Or the official scorer should say there was an error and at least give the guy a no hitter

The most impressive thing was the catch for the first out. I was late to a doctor appointment but wanted to see the last inning. As soon as that ball was hit I stood up to leave. I could not believe Jackson caught up to it. It is one of the greatest catches I have ever seen. I won't look it if you only see it at the end of the play. You have to see it from when the ball is hit. Unbelievable Jackson caught up to it.

agree was a great catch, hoever this game will be remembered for one thing only

time to allow skippers to challenge plays - do a video booth review, this is too big a fuck up to let go

MLB is discussing this and will make a decision today

I think there is room for them to over rule the call in the best interest of baseball

I won't hold my breath that Selig will do it as he is only one cell better than Bettman as far as brainpower

The official scorer has stated that there is "No possibility" that he'll change it to an error.

I think this will result in an NFL-style "bench requested review" format, but I'm not sure I want this call overturned by Selig as it would just open up a HUGE can of worms. Everybody keeps bringing up the 1985 World Series blown call as an example.

Either way, next year or even this year there will be instant replay changes as a result of this.

I would agree about not overturning it except in cases like this when it is obvious, the ump agrees, and it would have been the last play of the game.

but when is a game never turned on one play that makes all the difference? teams feel gipped on strike calls and base running blunders (like the one last night) although this was a "perfect" game, you have to really think of it this way, if MLB allows replay the game has to make a fine line as to what is reviewable or it will go by the NFL, reviewing and scrutinizing every nuance.....

Difference is that Pine Tar was played under protest from the moment of the incident. That was MLB's way out.

Tigers never filed a protest and stated that they weren't going to file one.

Technically, the Pine Tar game ended with George Brett's HR, so it couldn't be played under protest because the game ended :24:
