I posted this because it's the first time I've ever heard of a crime against a white person referred to as a hate crime.

Na, last Halloween there was a group of like 8 Black kids that stomped a white girl.

They said she walked past their huge group of friends, and just started mouthing off and calling them the N-word.

I really really really dislike the phrase "hate crime". Does it really matter why someone did it? If a black person beats a white guy to death because he hates white people, how is that ANY different than the same thing happening without the racism?

It's classified as a hate crime because someone was killed simply because he hates another race.

It wasn't motivated by armed robbery. It wasn't motivated by a domestic disturbance. It was a crime motivated by hatred towards the color of the victims skin vs the color of the perpetrators' skin.

How can that not be classified as a hate crime?

Its one thing to assume motives, but another to punish the same offense differently.

They haven't even been punished, it's still an open case under investigation. Until a motive has been established, what else could it be? Someone was hated, and a crime was perpetrated against them. Even if it isn't racial, that's still a hate crime.

I think racism should be something to make the sentence longer. That's how it works over here and I agree with it

If you murder someone, its hate no matter how you look at it. It doesn't matter what "kind" of hate it is. its just hate. All murder and violence are hate crimes.

As much as I hate racists and think they are the scum of the Earth, I just don't think someone should be given more time just because of the nature of their motivation.

A hate crime has traditionally meant one that has one race harming another. That's just become the connotation. It doesn't matter what kind of crime is committed, it it involves 2 races, it's known as a hate crime. Not saying it's an adequate description...but it's what people say.
