Not Australian, but in recent years have reduced the intake of salt, so much that I take salt dispenser off the local chippie and do the salt levels myself, which compared to him is like a pinch compared to him literally pouring on the stuff:yuk

Cramps are mainly due to Potassium deficiency in the body. Bananas and dried dates, peaches, apricots etc should be good for you:)

I am so sorry Sir but i beg to differ. Cramps is 'NOT MAINLY' due to Potassium deficiency. It's a deficiency mainly of Potassium, Sodium and imbalance of Fluids and Electrolytes in the body which can be related to dehydration. Meaning Potassium and Sodium are mainly the components lacking but still it has something to do with an imbalance of other electrolytes in the body. Are you aware Sir which major muscle mainly are Potassium dependent for it's functioning? Why i know this? Coz i am in the Medical Field and pls before giving wrong info check that info first if it's accurate! Just a friendly advise :)

You're mistaking this thread as his opinion, when this is just a factual issue. The fact that someone is telling me my country is salt-ridden, I don't care, why worry? Maybe he has that opinion, but this thread doesn't show it.

I don't have anything against the facts about Salt being too much in our diet and the health hazards it brings if it's in excess which is very true and I agree with you

However, it's wrong if he gives you wrong medical facts like that 'Potassium' is the main culprit to your concerns of leg cramps. Check my post earlier and the link that it's not just Potasium that's the culprit but salt also and other electrolytes hence as u said- it helps relieve your cramps when you eat salt as probably in your case- Salt might be the main deficiency in your diet. ;)

Dear Mme,

First of all I refute your allegation of passing wrong information about Potassium deficiency leading to cramps,
I still believe in the truth of my suggestion because I have been attending my late wife for some years during her congestive cardiac failure traumas..Apart from other manifestations of electrolyte imbalance and in this case Potassium which only a cardiologist could know or as they may appear in an electrolyte test or an ECG, cramps are one of the symptoms known to every layman like me. I am not a doctor so I don't need to delve deeper in the subject...however, I too sometimes have cramps in the foot which indicate to me that my electrolyte balance has been disturbed. Banana and dried dates and some other veggies serve me as a natural remedy. Upon this hypothesis I suggested a natural replenishment through use of bananas...and can see nothing wrong with it. You are just trying to show off your medical intrigue but to impress whom?? All here are well-informed and educated people....and know there is no harm in eating bananas.
I would be charged of wrong advice if i had given a medical suggestion or advice but I haven't done nothing of that sort so your accusation is wrong and baseless.

Please refrain from making this a ' medical thread' because I can hardly find anyone here interested in unreliable medical advice from internet links.... at least I am not.

Exactly the point Sir. You had been taking care of your late wife with CHF( Congestive Heart Failure) That's the reason for the Potassium as that's the main electrolyte needed for heart muscle to function well. I know u are smart Sir as u have stated several times on your previous threads however, i think giving Kimmy the wrong info by saying Potassium is *mainly* the reason for her cramps. I agree about the good sources of Potassium kudos there BUT AGAIN making POTASSIUM as the MAIN ELECTROLYTE DEFICIENT WITH HER AS YOU"RE ADVISING is NOT the main reason for her cramps. You defy your own reasoning as u state now the it's an imbalance of all electrolytes when earlier it's mainly 'Potassium'

I am sorry but i am gonna treat this thread as a medical thread as you are providing information related to health aren't you? Doesnt that make it medical given you're giving the wrong medical info without basis? I rest my case :cool

come on, take it easy, Kimmy can take care of herself. I only told her what i knew from my personal experience...

please do enlighten us more about medical science regarding this thread but please do not expect me to take
your prescribed medicines as I still want to live....and live on!!:)
what do you say about coconut 'syrup'....is it good for Potassium, for health???

Amazing how threads can turn.

All I know is that I trust the advice of someone with a medical background rather than those without, whatever their personal experiences as they are hardly reliable for the general populous...

As regards something nearing the original topic - I try to avoid adding *extra* salt to anything except perhaps a bag of chips from the chippy.
