Let me preface this so you understand where I am coming from. I live in Alabama. We have no professional sports teams in our state. College football is king here but any college sport has a following. Most of the state is divided between Auburn fans & Alabama fans. Even the fans of other in state colleges usually have a preference of one school over the other. As you may know Alabama won the BCS National Championship and the Heisman trophy last year. Auburn did the same thing this year. I live in a small town and the Alabama fanbase far outweighs the Auburn fanbase which is basically true throughout the state.
Last year when Alabama won it all, the local Walmart went all out. There was a pallet on the Sports Illustrated Commemorative Issue at each end of the store. There was also a huge display of clothes & other items to commemorate their championship. There was even a Crimson Tide tent. This all stayed on display from the championship game all the way until Valentine's Day. This dominated the front of the store for over a month. I was in the store a few days after this years BCS championship game...nothing. Went back a few days later there were two small racks of the Sports Illustrated commemorative issue in the magazine area. The only Auburn BCS shirts were in the men's department hidden behind 5 racks of Alabama clothing. Unfortunately my town is small enough I cannot eliminate shopping at Walmart but I will drastically curtail my purchases there. It is my belief you should hide your disdain for the other program if you intend to make money off that fanbase.
