No, for two reasons. The first is to do with the industry. It can pay these athletes the money they get because it's sustainable to do so, plus you have the manufacturing companies who pay the athletes to wear their merchandise/sportswear. Plus they do put on a show for people depending on what the sport is. It's also the fact that it isn't a forever thing. There's a reason you don't see 45 year old footballer's, the body isn't physically able to carry on anymore in that sport.

they don't? really? how much is needed to survive in this world? athletes usually go back into the field they excelled at anyways. look at the retired baseball/football/hockey players, they are either doing play by play or in the intermission discussing what the local team is doing. there is a reason why some do not graduate to the national level is because some do not know how to discuss on how it gets done
I highly doubt they went to college enough to get their damn degree!!!.
Do you think Wayne Gretzky could explain how he saw the ice when he played? or how to over come an injury? I think athletes are way overpaid and treated like heroes for all the wrong reasons. Granted it is great when the home team wins the championship, but it is their job to play their heart out and not make the average fan think that their salary is worth every penny. but they cannot relate toe the public with their outrageous salary demands. hell, my dad was a truck and a sole proprietor and he couldn't call out sick or demand to the union that he get a raise. He worked hard for his "salary" and didn't put the family in jeopardy when the energy crisis of the 1970s came around. He was lucky enough to get out of the trucking business at the right time because Fed Ex,UPS,Flying Tigers, DHL, etc. came on board and companies realized that having fleets of trucks could save money as well...

I know this is jumping all over the place but it seems we put professional athletes on a pedestal and they really shouldn't be..

It is all about supply and demand. They supply a talent that is big in demand. They get paid for what they do.

and your ticket prices go higher and higher, so the sports-fan who isn't a billionaire can't go see a game? know how much tickets for some of the Stanley Cup Finals were going for? $2000...a single seat!!!!

And the manufacturing industry has the profits to pay them because they moved the factory to China and pay their workers $5 per day to make official NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL trinkets to sell to American fans whose wages are shrinking because their plant moved overseas.

Plus they do put on a show for people depending on what the sport is. It's also the fact that it isn't a forever thing. There's a reason you don't see 45 year old footballer's, the body isn't physically able to carry on anymore in that sport.

They do put on a show indeed - "Bread and Circuses" to distract us all from the economic fucking the American working class has been taking the last 30 years.

I think they're overpaid. I understand that people are very passionate about sporting events but at the end of the day, all they are is games. Just games. They don't solve crimes or save lives or really do anything to help the everyday man beyond providing entertainment, and whilst I don't want to entirely devalue the importance of community and team spirit, I do think those ridiculous salaries could be put to better use for others.

My job is not worthy. I'm an administrator for a small company and no, my job doesn't really help anyone compared to say, a nurse. But I get paid pretty much for the importance of what I do, and one day I hope to get a job with more importance and responsibility, and get a raise in the process. Now people like doctors train very hard and work very hard, and their work is vital. I believe people like that deserve salaries that reflect the effort and importance of the work they do. Likewise people like firefighters, midwives, teachers... I think people who work in public service are vastly underpaid compared to the importance of their day to day work.

But we're perfectly accepting of the idea that footballers, who do nothing more worthy than play a game in front of an audience, should make millions.

I'm not saying we should take that money off them. I recognise that people in the entertainment industry, above a certain level, have a tendency to get vast salaries. It's hard to argue that actors and actresses are any more entitled to their money than footballers are. If people are willing to pay for that then fine, it's not my money.

I just think the disparity is shocking. People we genuinely need as a society get barely above minimum wage, and people who are basically providing us with something we have no real need for beyond 90 minutes of a good time get paid more in a week than some people make in a lifetime.

If you play professional sports your league (hockey, football, baseball or some other crappy sport like soccer) make revenue. That revenue is lets say in the NFL is 9 billion dollars. Split that with 32 teams and 53 players a team. Do the math yourself. Lets imagine you got a job. You work at a factory making pillows. How hard is it to make a pillow ? Your going to get payed peanuts. Because A. No one gives a shit about pillows. B. Helen Keller could do that job. Now lets say Wayne Rooney plays for ManU and has a contract of 600,000 a year. He becomes one of the best players in the league and most popular. His contract is up. So he can test the market to see what he is worth. Anyone that is willing to pay him can make a bid on him. So I offer him 5 million a season. That sets what is called a benchmark for a player of his caliber. Now top ST are going to be looking to make Wayne Rooney money. Athletes are put on a pedistal and they are making the money that the market demands of them. So to say there over paid is retarted because if you making pillows could make you 5 million a year you would take it. Just pillow making is not that lucrative. Sports makes money and the players get paid properly for there craft.

So you are saying it is ok to fuck over the working class in order to pay athletes millions?

In the United States, minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and no heath care, vacation or sick pay for most in that class, and increasingly for millions of other workers.

Those "jobs created" by these pro clubs are mostly minimum wage beer and hot dog vendors and janitors for the stadiums.

WTF is wrong with working class people to condone a system like this and look down upon their own working class friends, family and neighbors while putting athletes and professional team owners up on a pedistal? I stand in awe of the corporate propaganda brain washing machine that has robbed otherwise decent people of their common sense.

salaries were not out of whack sixty years ago. most atheletes had two jobs to cover for the months during the offseason, then probably had to get a job if and when they retired. What about those players who couldn't play any longer due to a career ending injury? it wasn't until recently that the players who did retire due to those injuries got some sort of compensation for that. no matter which way you look at it, it is crazy....and dont get me started about endorsement deals...

How do this "fuck over the working class" ? Where does that come from ? The fact that these guys/girls devoted there life to a sport and are finally getting a payday for it ? You think they just said one day "Im going to become a famous hockey player". They worked 10x harder and where more determined then 3/4 of the working class.

So ? It is minimum wage. Everyone starts somewhere. You don't like your situation then change it. Don't cry about it :).

You don't know anything about the jobs created and the revenue theses teams have made for communitys. That is an off base comment that is full ignorance. The charity work alone by some organizations would put your comments to shame.

It is not crazy it is business. It is better in the pockets of the players and not in the owners. You get injured and go on disability. That is what it is for. You play with fire sometimes your going to get burned.

Hey, there are plenty of people who don't give a shit about Wayne Rooney, but everyone likes pillows :p

Seriously, I understand that of course if you get a job that requires very little skill then sure, you're not going to make a million. All I feel is wrong about this is that people who do jobs of importance, jobs that save lives or teach our kids or fight crime, don't always make radically more than the people making pillows. Now in comparison to a footballer making thousands a day, that seems unfair, which is why I think they're overpaid. They don't do anything of real worth beyond entertainment, but their sense of self-importance has become grossly inflated over time and for some reason people actually buy into the idea that they're doing something worth so much as well.

There devoting all there time to there sport. You think the best players in the world just show up to play when they have a game ? There whole life is training and doing media events. It consumes them 24/7 pretty much. It is not an easy life. I find it hard to belive an Doctor or Teacher or Police Officer is having a hard time making ends meet.

what about a nurse? they have to learn about new techniques and the like, almost have to be more aware than a doctor in some instances and they dont get paid nearly enough either!

They are way over paid. Nobody actually "needs" that much money. I give them props for going out there, and doing it, but I still think they are over paid.

Yeah so that is the pro athletes fault. Maybe we should blame the nurse for not becoming a doctor.....:jk. Seriously though. The more educated in the health industry the more you will make. Yeah nurses go though somme shit in the run of a day. I don't know what to say to that !

If that industry has that profit margin though how are they over paided. That is like saying the guy who invented velcro should only make X amount of dollars because he is not a doctor.

What part of American factories being shipped overseas to manufacture cheap pro team trinkets, clothing and sneakers do you not understand? How do you think these manufacturers get the BILLIONS in profits to sponsor these athletes? By paying slave wages to Chinese workers, that's how.

You think this is a good thing for the middle class? Do you think this supports a prosperous and vibrant middle class economy?

So ? It is minimum wage. Everyone starts somewhere. You don't like your situation then change it. Don't cry about it :).

Spoken like someone who does not know WTF they are talking about. When you get laid off your job and have to take one paying half of what you previously earned, then come back and tell us about it.

You don't know anything about the jobs created and the revenue theses teams have made for communitys. That is an off base comment that is full ignorance.

Tread carefully saying what someone you know nothing of knows about macro economics. I've been working in the American economy for over 31 years my young friend - that's longer than you have inhabited the planet. Your statement is ignorant and off base to use your own words. Aside from the highly paid coaches, agents and allied news media, most of those jobs pay shit and in our current economy, working families are forced to take what they can get while these teams make millions and bitch about paying even low wages to the maintenance staffs.

You stand in awe of the "corporate propaganda brain washing machine". We sand it awe of a great sports play ;).

You have bought the corporate propaganda hook, line and sinker.

my sister is a CCRN (Critical care registered nurse ICU) and she has to be certified to do this and the hospital does not pay her to do this, she has had the same position for over twenty years and she has to read journals and go to seminars about her ever changing profession. Doctors too have to do this, they need to keep abreast of their ever changing environment and I think they should be educated in their fields. most athletes are not college grads and really should look at themselves if they are to be placed in that lofty place in people's lives.
