I know Atheists who have gone to chuch religiously and decided that the answers they were given didn't hold water. My boyfriend, for example. It wasn't because of the way people acted, it's not because he doesn't have to worry about the consequences of his actions. In reality, he takes full responsibility of his actions at the time they are carried out. He realizes that noone else is responsible for him or his actions. He's a scientist, and science and religion rarely get along.

oh...my....god...

THANK YOU!!

I just regained a small ounce of faith in humanity.
You have single-handedly proven to me that these forums are not full of dumbasses, at least ONE person here knows how to debate. Thank you!

Ok, now getting back to the topic...

as for the case of your boyfriend, I can understand where he is coming from and there is nothing wrong with that. I don't know if he thinks like this, but I know many Atheists find one religion to be false so they become Atheists and completely reject the idea that a god may exist. I personally think that if you're going to follow science that you should remain open to the possibility to a god existing rather than allow bias, wadda ya think?

ah, well, he actually throws a little spirituality in his lifestyle, instead of a straight religion. He meditates each morning before preparing for the day. He's offered me a place to set up an altar for us for a dedicated spot for his meditation and my practice.

He's never said that he's rejected anyone's religion, just the answers he was presented with when he questioned his church clergy.

YES!
that is something I can completely agree with. I myself am somewhat of a Christian, as in I was raised a Christian and I still go to church, however my beliefs are based off of logic and my beliefs are quite different and much more simplistic than the beliefs of your average Christian.
For example, I find that in all likelyhood God does exist.
However, logically, in all likelyhood we do not have souls and there isn't a heaven. That doesn't mean I reject the ideas of souls and heaven, but I just don't think its likely.

I had to go look up the word deist...

I think heaven & hell were just places that were made up as a reward/punishment system. Like if you're a bad kid, you get time-out, if you're a good kid, you get chuck-e-cheese.

Even watched Robin Williams stand-up? The really old stuff. I think he was the one who said the bible was made up so that people didn't do really absurd things like marry their camels. I forget.
I've been told my brain's like a set of encyclopedias with chunks missing and pieces rearranged. So forgive me if I sound like a freak. 'Cause I am :D

I just wanted to apologize to all the members of this forum for letting what's his name get under my skin and saying some of the things I said. I'm sure that was exactly what he wanted though.
And to Saint whatever your name is. You can have a friendly debate without insulting other people and their opinions. So stop with the name calling. I know for a fact that you have received a warning about it already. Just because someone else's opinion differs from yours gives you no right to insult them or say that they are incapable of an intelligent debate.

Oh yeah, and welcome to the forum.

Sorry, but freedom of speech is something I enjoy, I see no reason to refrain from calling idiots out. I *could* be friendly, but like I said earlier I'm a sociopath, friendliness is foreign to me.
So in closing: screw you pansie, suck it up.

Yes you do have certain freedoms when it comes to speech... But there are limits as to how far you will be allowed to go here. Pissing off enough members here WILL get you banned from the site. Yes, as you have stated earlier, there are ways around IP banning. But I can assure you that all the time you will spend getting new e-mail addresses to sign up with so we can ban you again with one click will not be worth your time.
So relax a bit and debate your topic. I know that I look forward to debating your very weak arguement when I get out of work. This is a topic in which I have many things to say, and I will share them later.

can we chill? just a little?

In all honesty, nothing is more relaxing to me than pointing out idiots.

seriously...I can't be held responsible for using vulgarity if these clods keep talking to me. some things can't be helped.

besides, my class is boring and this is almost entertaining.

This is where you are wrong. You are the only one that will be held responsible.
So relax a bit before you are removed from this "almost entertaining" site and you have to pay attention in your "boring" class.

Personally I'm not an atheist but am agnostic. I believe in God but don't agree with organised religion. I respect other peoples beliefs though as long as they respect mine and don't try to blow me up because they think I'm an infidel or a pagan. See, this is the thing about organised religion, it seems to make a lot of people lose the plot and try to harm others who don't agree with them. Whats that all about? Surely one of the fundamental teachings of Jesus was to love your neighbour! Thats just my opinion though and I respect anyone who disagrees with me as long as they don't resort to childish name calling!
