Not all but most birds sleep with their head tucked into their wing. If you watch them long enough you'll see them pop an eye open, have a look around and close it again when they feel safe.So that's what they are doing when they do that (2nd picture). I have a pic like that and wondered what it was all about. Plus another pic with the bird seemingly looking straight up and sometimes (I think, from memory) making a noise - keeping its head up all the time.
