ok, so here is a weird one. I have a computer connecting to a wired network. After about 2 weeks of a fresh install of windows this happens every time. My network card disconnects and reconnects constantly. I have to manually set the card at 10mb to make it stable again. I have replaced the network card 3 times with different brands and models and tried who knows how many different cables. The computer is right on top of the router so distance isnt an issue.

What kind of router is it? Have you installed the latest router firmware?

Its a linksys befsx41 router. Yes I have the latest firmware. None of the other computers on the network seem to have the problem and I have allso tried swaping ports on the router and changing pci slots. It seems to be a computer problem of some sorts.

I do not really want to do a complete re-install of XP, so if I buy a legal copy of XP, can I attempt to just fix an illegal one, that is just install the key?

Yes, you can by downloading and runing the program at this link
Genuine Microsoft Software

If your copy of windows is several years old I would recomend a reinstall any way. Reinstalling windows will help clear up a bunch of unwanted garbage and speed up your system in general.

Ok Tegan, I have one for you and it may seem simple at first... but trust me, it's a bastard of a problem.

Problem: Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection driver failure

Computer: Compaq Presario X1000 (DS829AV) CTO Notebook PC

OS: Windows XP Home edition, service pack 2 (completely up to date)

What I Tried: logged in as Admin, First I tried to roll back the driver, but there was none to roll back to. I also tried a system restore, nothing. So I delete the hardware in the device manager then reinstalled the newest drivers. I still get This device cannot start (code 10) and in the device manager shows the little yellow exclamation mark over the device. Thinking that the newest driver is probably corrupt, I download it again and give it another shot. Nothing.
Ok, my next move is to try and get an older version of the drivers... Nothing. I try every version I can find on Compaq's/HP's site and on Intel's site. Still nothing.
Next I physically remove the card from the laptop reboot and try installing the drivers before the device is installed. Still nothing.

This damn card is driving me up the wall. There are a lot of other people that are having the same issues with this card on their machines, just check all of the articles on the web about it. I know that the card that is in my machine is not the same as one that I would buy from Intel (the laptop companies sometimes use proprietary chips on them) but come on... this is crazy.

BTW, this is a friends computer and I'm trying to fix this problem for him. I wasn't working when I got it from him... a computer tech tried to fix his intermittent loss of signal and messed up the drivers.

I've had trouble with my Intel PRO/Set Wireless before, and what I had to do was go in to Device Manager and physically delete the device itself. When you boot back up it should tell you that it found a new device and attempt to install it. You can also use Crap Cleaner (google for it) to remove the faulty installer registry entries and try re-installing the driver package and then removing the device to re-detect it.

woah, how did you become a mod so fast? hope you come back around to catch this:

a friend of mine has a windows OS that has the administrative log in blocking his log in's ability to see videos of any kind. is there some way around this? should we hack the password for the administrator and change it then? what programs would be good for the job?
