Are you patriotic?

I raise the question as I am surrounded by people talking about the football (soccer for most of you I guess) and most of them find if very strange that I am not cheering England on in the World Cup.

The truth is I am not a sporty persom and I dislike football (soccer) hugely. I think the majority of players are overpaid yobs who often represent their country very badly when they think the paparazzi are not around and are often caught with their trousers down etc...

The other thing is that I am not really patriotic. If England was to go to war I would rather go to prison than fight for my country. I don't honestly think the English have much to be proud of, nor for that matter the Americans.

Whats your opinion??

I'm an Aussie & we are also supposed to love our sports but I am not a big fan of any code, although I do watch the big games, Grand Finals etc.

I must admit that as I type this I am also watching Australia play Japan in the World Cup. There is 8 minutes to go & we are losing.

I don't think that this has anything to do with Patriotism, though. (Australia just scored. Yay). Patriotism has more to do with your feelings about the country.

I'm definitely not a fan of war, but if someone was to break into my house, then I have to protect myself & my family - so If someone was to invade Australia I would fight to protect it.

What I think is wrong is going into another persons house because I heard a rumour that he wasn't a good guy - this is what is happening in Iraq. (Australia just scored again. Double yay)

Well that depends what country we're talking about. I don't think everyone here is from the US only, like myself. I suppose I am patriotic of this country even though I hate all its most favored sports other than basketball. If I were to compare what I had in my previous country to what I came to have in this country... well I'd never return that craphole-of-a-third-world-country again.

I'm wondering that too. I'm an American, and I have a lot to be proud of. In fact, there is no country I would rather be a citizen of than the United States of America.
As far as the sports thing goes, it should be your right to be a fan of whatever team you choose to. When I lived in Jacksonville, Fl I could have gone to a Jaguars game any time I wanted to, but, I am a die hard Packers fan (even though I'm not from Wisconsin) so I wouldn't have wasted my time going to a Jaguars game.

I think our sports teams are a joke. I don't have faith in our politicians. And I most certainly would not die for this country.

Don't get me wrong, I love the land itself... it's the people living here I have no liking for.

And no, I am not in the US... I am in Africa!

In this day and age countries as a whole rarely do anything that should make their inhabitants proud. Maybe if you go back a few decades then yes, there were achievements that were world changing and that should be remembered by all, but what do we have these days??

I honestly don't have anything that springs to mind to make me proud of Great Britain. I was in a pub on Saturday evening and they were showing a football match between Argentina and Mexico. Two seperate groups of British lads who were in the pub watching the game decided to start fighting... Great Britain and it great game.. :dunno

How about a bit of peace[/b]... that might make me proud.
