I read once that making judgements based on our very first impression of someone is a survival instinct - if your previous experiences have taught you that mexican people are violent for example, maybe because you were once beaten up by a gang of them, then your brain stores that info against their race in case it helps you avoid a similar situation later.
Obviously it's not so easy on an individual basis - just because a little blond white kid bullied you at school doesn't mean all blond white guys will be arseholes to you. But it does mean if someone has a bad experience, they can't avoid having a certain amount of trepidation towards people who fit the same profile.
whenever I hear the word obtuse used I think of Shawshank RedemptionI despise ignorant, arrogant, spiteful, mean, blatantly obtuse people....doesn't matter what color they are. :ninja

Some of my family members who have passed away were extremely racist. I grew up around that and always tended to shy away from the "black kids" in school. As I got older, I became very different from the earlier influences of my childhood. One of my roomates in college was from Burundi, Africa. He remains one of my better friends in life. I've discovered that it doesn't matter what the color of a person's skin...everyone can be extremely pleasant to be around or complete a$$holes. Regardless, I try to remain the same around everyone![]()
