I contend we are not. Things are made cheaply and not designed to last. We don't fix a computer or an appliance we buy a replacement and dispose of the old.

I threw away a 55 gallon drum of 8-track tapes when they became obsolete. Cassette tapes same fate.
I still have some LP's but no way to play them especially the 78's which are not designed for a diamond needle.

I had a VCR and a lot of tapes. No more those are obsolete too.

TV's well a decree came from on high and suddenly analog was no longer available. The converters were a joke and most bought new TV's to get the HD quality. Where did all the TV's go? Landfills most likely.

Most of what we buy today is designed to break so we can purchase the new better product, also designed to break and be replaced.

It is my opinion we are "green" just by words and not by deeds.

My hubby has green eyes. I still have a few LPs, but yeah, u r right no way to play them. I have some cassettes, I do have a cassette player. I have some VHS tapes, still do have a VHS recorder and with begging, can get my hubby to rewire our system to play a tape I want. I don't think I have any 8 tracks, don't really miss them as the abrupt change to another track was kinda disturbing. We have a small screened tv. We have a lot more important items on our wish list than a flat screened large screened tv. If you don't get used to watching it that way u don't wish for it so bad ;)

We do recycle our aluminum and plastics. I also save tabs from pop cans for McDonalds, but that's about it for us Fred.

I hate "green" thinking.

Don't go out and buy a prius... Just keep the car you've got now until it can run no longer.

Well, when you put it that way....then no! :p

but isn't that all part of being a consumerist society? and what results when we have people that keep on creating better mouse traps? I understand how wasteful it all sounds, but am also glad for MANY of the modern conveniences.

I recycle, compost, donate old clothes and try not to get the newest thing just because it's new - I always keep my cars for 10 years if I can - electronics are harder - more of a need to keep up with things there - except, cell phones - I only have one for emergencies - and its only my second one.

( I can't get it to stop being in italics???)

We pretend we are, but we aren't I personally recycle anything that I can, I try to use public transportation when necessary, and I bring my own bags to the grocery store. Is that green? Yeah, kinda. I respect our planet and I'd like to see it in good shape for years to come.

Yeah, we're not a "Green" society, unless we do it for America.

We tend to buy useless products, and drop the junk in the open.

I just bought reusable bags for when I just have to get one or two things. I got one for each grocery store that I go to - don't want to offend anyone - but I do use the regular bags for garbage - don't see the sense in buying garbage bags when they work just as well.

The problem is, nothing is made to last. We live in a society where you buy things because you want them, not because you have a serious need for them - does anyone wear clothes until they wear out anymore? Or even mend clothes that need fixing in some way? We just throw things away, whether they're dead or not.

I use garbage bags as well, but I tend to empty my garbage straight into the dumpster and throw the bags in recycling.

I've heard all the hippy talk about the evils of consumerism...
I used to see it all the time on here from a certain member, who ironically was an Apple fan boy and had all the latest iMacs, iPads, iPods, iPhones..

I'd like for people practice what they preach. And if they can't do that, stfu.

I tend to wear clothes until the color becomes faded. When I decide I probably will not be wearing something anymore if it is in good shape I donate it.

I don't wear stuff that long, but I never throw it out. I have a bin in my garage for Goodwill. About every two months I drop it off to them. It's always full of random stuff that someone else can use.
