Classic sitcoms like Friends and The Office remain popular, but newer shows struggle to replicate their charm. Are laugh tracks outdated? Has comedy writing changed? What’s a recent sitcom that feels as iconic as the classics?

They are less popular as they don't work with a streaming format and American tastes have shifted in the last 20 years as a result of increased streaming options like Netflix

Yes, it's losing its appeal and the reason is not far fetched. It’s because new sitcoms lack that special essence which made classic sitcoms so appealing like having memorable characters and excellent storytelling. The modern shows with their interesting characters and humor cannot match the traditional sitcoms.

Laugh tracks do feel outdated to many, as they can come across as forced or artificial in today's more nuanced comedic landscape. Comedy writing has evolved to be more character-driven, witty, and observational, often relying on sharp dialogue and situational humor rather than artificial cues.

I don’t watch modern sitcoms, but from what I’ve gathered, many people feel the charm is fading due to predictable humor or overly polished formats. Others still enjoy the newer ones, so it’s really a matter of personal preference.
