To me, a hero is someone who risks his or her life to save others.

Yet, when some people, such as firefighters or police officers, for example, risk their lives and save someone, they often say, "I was just doing my job."

Sure, performing heroic acts are part of the job description for certain professions. But that doesn't mean that when they risk their lives to save others, it's not heroic.

Any hero who says he or she was just "doing my job" is minimizing how heroic they are.

putting their life on the line is part of their job, it is an accepted risk but it does not define their job, i.e. you cannot say a firefighter has not doen his job if he safely puts out a small bush fire where no life was at risk

so no it is not their job

A hero can be anyone, depending on the actions. Many acts go unnoticed because no one else finds out. A big cheer to everyone who does anything for others.
