I have never once seen any of the Harry Potter movies nor read any of the Harry Potter books but there are several different people that keep telling me the books are VERY good and that I wouldnt be disappointed if I read one.
Have any of you guys read any of the Harry Potter books? If so, would I be wasting my money if I was to purchase 1 or do you think I will really enjoy reading one?

Childrens books, I find it frankly embarressing the amount of adults who are actually proud of reading them, if you like that sort of thing, read Lord of the rings or something.

Nothing against them, yes the're good books but the're good CHILDRENS books. It just seems to me to be a fad people are jumping on to look cool in some way, not because they actually enjoy them.

They are not really childrens books..they have mature themes :) And yes they are really good, better than the movies bc of more detail...lets put it this way..My husband hates reading and he read them and actully finished and this is from a guy that the last book he read was "The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe" and that was in middle school...lol

Honestly in my opinion for you to not have read them and comment on the other adults leads me to believe you tried reading them and just didn't understand them..lol :jk

I've read the books and I've enjoyed them myself. I think that if you decide to read one, you would enjoy it. I think the books have been very good, so I think you'd like it. :)

I haven't really given the Harry Potter books much of a chance. I probably won't until I've got plenty of time to read the books (Which won't happen till I'm out of school). I didn't enjoy the movies, though.

Harry Potter books aren't Childrens books. It's just popular among children.

Depends on what sort of reading you like really, doesn't it? I mean if you like stuff about magik and witchcraft, or going along in a story about a bunch of children who grow up fighting an adult wizard and his minions then yes you'd love them.

I my self have seen the movies first and have only recently begun reading the books with my ten year old son.... I find the books fascinating and so much better than the movies- the movies however are also VERY good.

The themes are very much more adult to young adult so I think ALMOST all adults would find them interesting...its the suspense and mystery that keeps you reading them, I find. The last book is very much for a more adult audience for the fact it dabbles with love between the characters...so I certainly wouldn't call them ALL children's books as they do get more adult and grow with the audience that first began with the series.

Harry Potter was aimed for the younger generation, but because of its popularity it soon became interest to the older generation...there are Harry Potter books available for "elders" if you feel a lil embarassed reading the younger version..

I read Harry Potter books until I came across the Lord of the Rings in 7th grade. Ever since I've been a die hard Tolkien fan.

I've read all of them. The first book in the series was my least favorite, but you have to get through them in sequence to understand what's going on as the series progresses. If you don't want to commit to buying them, I am sure you can find copies at your local library. Or borrow a copy from someone - there's certainly someone you know who has a set of them.
The series is quite entertaining for a number of reasons:
1) there are characters who constantly remain throughout the books and you feel like you "get to know them",
2) there are plenty of antagonist-protagonist situations,
3) the imagery in descriptive writing is superb,
4) the imagination is excellent - you've never imagined or seen anything like it,
5) the vocabulary is not "dumbed down" - you won't feel like you're reading a kid's book at all
6) once you get hooked, you won't be able to put them down,
7) while there are instances in some of the books where the action is "slow", for the great majority of the time, they're a good read,
8) some parts will make you cry or cheer or be outraged or be afraid - in other words, the books are capable of eliciting emotional responses
