I've been watching on HBO but I gave up. Can't follow the plot nor keep the characters straight in my mind. Maybe if I read the story it would help my understanding but for now it's off my radar.

I definitely think you should read the books first. GRRM writes a lot like Stephen King in the sense that he likes to have 50 different story threads that only tie together towards the end.

I had no problem keeping track when I started season one before starting the book. I think the script writers did a good job on seperating the different characters plot points

I watched all of season one before I started reading the book, now, I think this was partly because I was multi-tasking whilst watching it the first time round and it didn't have my full attention, but I would get confused some of the time with who's who and what was going on. I got to re-watch the series when I got the hubby to watch it all and that ironed it all out for me.

This last episode was the most disappointing the way it just cut off, I didn't think all the story lines progressed as they usually do. One or two did, I don't want to give anything away but like the one story line has been dragged out all season and only now something which could have happened in the first episode has happened. If you've seen it I think you'll know which one I'm talking about. I'm sure it goes along with the book though..

Any other book fans surprised about the way they've twisted things from the book? Some of the changes make sense in order to condense the plot - but I feel like there have been some decent changes that I don't really understand why they did them.

Also, the words of my BF when describing what he hopes happens next (he hasn't read the books): "I hope he [Jon Snow] just kicks the wall and it falls down and kills theon" LOL

Yeah I know what you mean...
I'm currently almost at the end of the third book, whilst my fiance is just following the tv series, at the end of an episode (like last weeks) I said "well, I've no idea what's going to happen next..." and he's like "of course you do you've read all this", then I had to explain how it's almost like a complete different story line some times. I'm interested to see where they go with some of these story lines, of course I'm sure it will end up the same way it does in the books but right now it's just so different. I kind of like the fact that even though I've read the book I'm still getting surprised by watching the series, maybe that's what they were aiming for.

I watched the 1st season, though I did just buy it on DVD. The second season starts soon. I'm so excited. :D

It is fairly true to the books. In fact, most of the characters' lines are directly from the books.

I've heard the opposite, that its extremely true to the books. HBO does a good job at that from what I'm told

The first season was very true to the book. In the second season you'll find the condensed version of the book in the show, however the major themes are maintianed. There is so much going on, so many sub plots that there is no way they could have fit it all in a single HBO season. For example:
the Red Witch used her skills two times in the book to birth a demon to slaughter King Stanis's adversaries, but you get the idea. I also noted in the show that Daerney's dragons were never stolen and the council of Qarth was not murdered by the House of the Undieing. Frankly I don't know why they felt this was necessary in the show. As I recall, she went to the warlocks in the House of the Undieing to receive their wisdom.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I love the books more... but the show is still really good.

It's fairly true to the books, except with a few embellishments... for example, as it's HBO, there is a bit more gratuitous sex than in the books.

I've always enjoyed sexual content in a show like this. However I acknowledge it can be overdone as in say, True Blood. I guess it boils down to personal preferences. :)

Some people criticize the "sexposition" on the show- but your books have plenty of sex. Do you ever take heat for that?

“You can write the most detailed, vivid description of an ax entering a skull, and nobody will say a word in protest. But if you write a similarly detailed description of a penis entering a vagina, you get letters from people saying they’ll never read you again. What the hell? Penises entering vaginas bring a lot more joy into the world than axes entering skulls.”

-George R.R. Martin, “The Hand Behind the Throne” by Gavin Edwards, Rolling Stone #1157, May 24, 2012.

Spoilers!

After watching last Sunday's episode, for anyone who has read the second book, I don't remember Rob Stark acquiring
a girlfriend Talisa and I don't remember his mother turning The King Slayer, Jamie Lannister loose.
Did that happen in the book? Thanks!

To answer your questions.... HUGE SPOILERS, DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOKS...
Robb does not acquire a girlfriend, but rather gets wounded in battle and then falls in love with the daughter of a lesser lord, whom he ends up marrying and then impregnating. It was a huge deal, because it was what lost him the allegiance of the Freys and later led to the Red Wedding.

Also, Catelyn did in fact turn the Kingslayer loose - she did it after finding out that Bran and Rickon were killed (I know they weren't really dead, but she didn't)... she let Jaime go with the hope that he would return her daughters to her, because she did not want to lose any more children.

Really loved the last episode! Kinda sat that the season finale is next week, though.. =(
Think I've almost finished reading A Feast For Crows, reading on a Kobo and it doesn't tell me how far into the book I am! Think I'm close to the end, though!

I just don't remember Rob Stark
getting wounded or marrying anyone in the Second Book, nor Catelyn turning the Kingslayer loose.
I think that's sad, my weak memory that is...I admit I kind of got bogged down in it.

Yeah there are a lot of details... and the show changes the plot so much in places that it makes it more confusing to remember. I still keep wondering why they're leaving out Jojen and Meera, haha.

The main plot really hasn't been changed much at all... some of the details have though. As far as Jojen and Meera go, they'll be in Season 3.

I agree. The main themes of the book are there. IMO, there is just too much going on to make it a nice clean read. I love the atmosphere in this show and the basic story, however Clash of Kings along with the second season lacked the concise story telling of the first book. My opinion is that this is a case where an author tries to tell too much and it really hurt the show, which was reduced to MANY chit-chat dialog & sex scenes which act as filler instead of pushing the story forward.

After the fall of
King Baratheon, there should have been a quick build up to war, spending more time describing a rousing war campaign, and it's aftermath, along with the story of Daenery and her dragons coming back to the seven Kingdoms. The author could of told this very quickly, finding Quarth, her encounter in the House of the Dead, and finding a boat for passage. Even with the side stories of Theon Greyjoy, Brand's wolf connection, Jon Snow's mostly boring adventures North of the Wall, and Arya avoiding detection, I don't think it should have taken 1500 pages to tell this part of the story.
