A group of U.S. tourists, including a former Marine, killed a Costa Rican mugger by breaking his neck after he pulled a gun on them in a Caribbean port, a local police official said on Thursday.

The cruise ship passengers told police they jumped on Wagner Segura, 20, to defend themselves when he pointed a .38 caliber revolver at them near the Caribbean port of Limon on Wednesday, and somehow snapped his neck, regional police director Luis Hernandez said.

there is no "safe" place anymore, fighting back is the only way. Kudos to the Marine (if he was the one)

If they were taken to a "rough" neighborhood, was no one warned?

Definitely. He's a mugger: he wants money. He doesn't want to be a killer. So, if he has 10 people angrily charging at him, his first reaction is to think "should I shoot?" And while that split second is occupied with that thought, the mob tackled him and broke his neck. As opposed to a true psycho killer, who would have the initial reaction of killing. But even with a psycho, he'd probably only fire off one shot before the mob would get him. One very nervous and quickly aimed shot versus 10 quick moving and intimidating people. Who would win?

Its good to see that people are defending themselves and their fellow man. If people were more generally likely to fight back, than hide, crime would severely diminish.

I am gonna go out on a limb here and be the only one that is on the mugger's side. How do you know he wasn't a man trying to get money(Although there are easier ways) for his wife and kid(If he has any)? Even if he was just a mugger, that's bullshit to go and kill him. Just put in away for a few months, that punishment doesn't fit the crime.

He was killed in a struggle after he tried to rob people at gunpoint. He even had 2 helpers, one of which had a knife. I have zero remorse for him.

Again, the punishment does NOT fit the crime. Most people would get just a few months, at most a 2-5 years in prison. These people KILLED A MAN. For one, they should be in prison now, and two, how did no cops see this, and why didn't anybody try to stop the people, or at least apprehend the men and throw the weapons out?

They aren't in jail because they didn't commit a crime.

And would you have gone rushing in to disarm the guy yourself if you just happened by during the fight?

No he wouldn't have been executed for that crime so we'll just call a would-be victim fighting back and you getting your neck broke an occupational hazard of that job.

In all honesty, I would have went for his gun, or at least broken his arm or something. They murdered a man, or whoever actually broke his neck murdered him, therefore they should be in jail. Look at it this way.

You weren't around when it happened, but ask many of the old members(James, Amy, V, Tim, etc.), my brother's friend was killed in a car accident because a semi cut their car off. But the thing is, the truck driver was released. Who was charged with his death? The person in the passenger seat! James was in the passenger seat(Not the James from here), and Johnny was driving. Johnny was a very little bit, but still over the legal BAC, so he didn't react in time, so James grabbed the wheel, hoping to not get rammed by the truck. The car rolled off an embankment and Harley was killed. James was charged for vehicular manslaughter, and later Johnny was as well.

See? In one case, the person who was trying to save the people actually ended up in jail, so why not do the same in this case? They actually KILLED HIM, James didn't know Harley woudl end up dead.

I'm sorry to hear about that, thats unfortunate. But its 2 totally different stories. I don't think I'd ever feel compelled to help some poor mugger who was getting beat up by a would-be victim.

I don't think anyone intended to kill the guy, he was probably in a choke or headlock or something. Who really knows now, but if you think your life or your loved ones lives are in danger and you get into a physical confrontation you're not going to stop until the aggressor has been subdued and unfortunately in the process he died. I guarantee if he hadn't pulled a gun on them he'd be alive today or at least they wouldn't have caused him to die. Its unfortunate yes, but it was his fault and not theirs.

And I understand that, but the reason the police are there are so people don't do things like this. That's also why they have that 5-10-life law or whatever, commit a robbery you get 5 years, pull a gun you get 10 years, use the gun you get life. It's not just pulling a gun and you die.

But its not like a court ordered the tourists to kill him and its not like they waited til later and tracked him down when he was unarmed and intentionally killed him. If you're committing armed robbery you run the risk of retaliation and he got his. Hopefully others there will learn from this and not make the same mistake.

Well I just think they went too far with it. Sure, he was a mugger/robber, but just rough him up a bit. Kick his ass, break an arm or leg, knock out some teeth, but let him live :D

It's called 'self-defense'. If someone threatens your life, you have every right to react to that threat. Had police come while the armed robbery was in progress, it's reasonable to assume they too may have had to use deadly force, ie; fire their weapons.
This happened in Central America-a region pretty well known for its violence against innocent people by thugs.'Aw, he might have been robbing them to feed his family' is the biggest crock of crap anyone could utter. I want to feed my kids-maybe I should get a gun and rob people...
