i would have guessed the 1 in 500 was true when your partner had HIV but when they already have AIDS i was sure it was much higher

The test measures the level of CD4 lymphocytes, the type of white blood cell targeted by HIV. If the number of these cells falls below a certain level—or if the person has certain severe infections like those described earlier—then the person is said to have AIDS.

1 in 500,000,000 - If you have protected (condom used) vaginal sex with someone who is not in a high risk group

Using a condom only reduces your factor by 10

If you have unprotected vaginal sex with someone who has AIDS 500 times, you will have a 2 in 3 chance of getting infected. That's a 67% chance.

I was listening to the radio yesterday and they were telling all the statistics on aids. Here apparently the government want to introduce a new aids campaign much like one we had in the 80s to rais awareness that 16-25 yr old are being diagnosed with HIV more and more due to a series of long relationships. The chances of getting HIV from a one night stand is low. Which makes the story of the woman who was gang-raped an contracted HIV even more sad. Though I guess in rape the chances of blood swapping is also high.

Doesn't really matter does it? If I give you a revolver with one bullet loaded, you are blindfolded and told that you had a 1 in 6 chance of shooting yourself with it and if you lived, you'd be a billionaire, would you risk it?

I don't care if the chance of getting HIV is 1 in a trillion, if you know someone has it, no one in their right mind would risk it. Hell, the same would be true about Herpes and that doesn't even kill you.
