I won't be swayed by other people's sources. Can't I be the author of my own source and you guys can quote me as the source.
You want source I hav it but opinions differ. Checkout here:Notebooks - PC World

kelvin070 and Alien Allen need to stop fighting. can't we all just get along?
btw, I kind of agree with Alien Allen.
I have Sony Vaio but I wouldn't say it's superior in all aspects. If I had to be honest and pick a side, I
would go with Toshiba. Then Dell and Sony 3rd.

Let me borrow somebody's signature in another forum "opinions are like buttholes. We all have them and they stink"

Seriously man, the fact that you named Fujitsu and Thinkpad as 2 of the top laptops proves you don't know what you are talking about.

Like I said opinoions will differ. I respect your views. By and large all the brands meet acceptable minimum standards.

"... minimum standards." well give me one person who goes after the minimum standards and I'll give you one person who only wants a job that pays minimum wage.

we have a beat up pentium pc that is just about dead

want to buy a laptop that we can use anywhere in the house - so understand the need for a wireless router

basic needs are for surfing the net, watching DVDs, copying DVDs, storing photos (lots) and playing and storing music (lots) - basic word processing so the kids can do homework assignments etc etc

i am attracted to Apple (really cannot say why, just that friends whose opnion I value swear by them) thing is they are pricey

went to local computer shop and was quickly overwhealmed, the difference in processors confuses me

i have a hard time talking to the kids that work in these stores as they all quickly work out i have no clue and lots of credit and try to sell me $ 2000 worth of laptop/software

any advice
I got my Toshiba Satellite A215 on sale for $499. 15" screen, 160G hard drive and 2gigs RAM. I download and/or stream video constantly while surfing the web or doing work online. I'm on a wireless network and have never had problems. I traveled with it and accessed hot spots without any issues. I watch DVDs, burn DVDs, and use my microsoft office suite all the time.

I also have a 22" monitor hooked up to the laptop so I can multitask (stream a vid on one screen and work on the other), and use a cordless keyboard and mouse.

I love my Toshiba and would recommend it to anyone but kelvin. :D

malfunction rates are only one component of rating a computer.

if that was your point to begin with Kelvin you should have stated that.

There are other things such as tech support, pricing, value, etc. that come into play.

Good quality commands a premium price. The other aspects are basically equal. So the malfunction rates can help you to make a good decision.
