Adult services censored on Craigslist

(CNN) -- Embattled online classified service Craigslist apparently made a change to its website early Saturday, censoring its adult services section.

The section that usually reads "adult services" was replaced by the word "censored."
It was not immediately clear whether Craigslist removed the adult services and replaced them with the "censored" section that had a link that was not active. But for users who accessed the account outside the U.S., the erotic services link was still active.

Craigslist representatives were not immediately available for comment.
The website has been under fire for allegations that it promotes prostitution.
Last week, attorneys general in 17 states banded together to urge Craigslist to discontinue its adult services.

"The increasingly sharp public criticism of Craigslist's Adult Services section reflects a growing recognition that ads for prostitution -- including ads trafficking children -- are rampant on it," the attorneys general said in a Tuesday letter to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster and Founder Craig Newmark.

A Craigslist spokeswoman said at the time that the site agreed with at least some of the letter.
"We strongly support the attorneys general desire to end trafficking in children and women, through the Internet or by any other means," said Susan MacTavish Best, who handles press inquiries for Craigslist.

"We hope to work closely with them, as we are with experts at nonprofits and in law enforcement, to prevent misuse of our site in facilitation of trafficking, and to combat such crimes wherever they appear, online or offline."

In their letter, the attorneys general highlighted an open letter, which appeared as a Washington Post ad, in which two girls said they were sold for sex on Craigslist.

When the ad came out, Buckmaster wrote a blog post in response that said, "Craigslist is anxious to know that the perpetrators in these girls' cases are behind bars."

The letter also highlighted a report in May by CNN's Amber Lyon, who posted a fake ad in the adult section. She received 15 calls soliciting sex in three hours.

Earlier this month, Lyon interviewed a woman named "Jessica" who sells sex on Craigslist. She told Lyon a Craigslist ad was "the fastest, quickest way you're for sure going to see somebody that day."

This has been going on for over a decade that i know about. When I lived in AZ I had a friend who advertised on Craigslist as an escort for years and she would arrange for guys to meet her at her apartment for sex. She charged at least $100 a pop depending on what the guy wanted to do and for how long. She was murdered years ago and nothing ever came of who killed her or if it was related to Craigslist but I know it had to have been.

It's good to see that so many States are banning together to try to put a stop to Craigslists adult services section. Have any of you ever read some of the explicit ads that they had on there? And the part about girls being sold for sex on there is just horrifying to even think about.

Because without craigslist, women will never find a way to sell themselves
why the sarcasm? It would make prostitution harder instead of easier. What about the woman who got murdered and the guy killed himself in jail. you think its ok for things like that to happen?

Donnie craigslist was adding to the problem for over a decade. it's about time that a stop is put to it. the fact remains that prostitution is illegal. or are you getting upset cuz you cant read the exotic ads anymore? ;)

If they want to crack down on prostitution, they should probably try cracking down on prostitution. They're making a huge deal out of closing that part of craigslist, but all it's going to do is force those women out on the streets, where it's probably more dangerous for them.

No, I don't think people killing people is a good thing, but if that guy wanted to kill a hooker I'm pretty sure he could've found one without craigslist. It's completely ridiculous to take the most extreme example and pretend like that's what I'm saying.

What's going to stop the prostitutes from putting the same ads in the "housing for rent" section, or the "buy used cars" section? Absolutely nothing.

Making craigslist out to be the bad guy here is asinine, the "lawmakers" are going after it because it's the easy target, not because it's the best solution to the problem. Hell, wouldn't it just make more sense to leave the site up, and go arrest the prostitutes when they post ads advertising sex for sale? That's what they would do if they wanted to stop prostitution, instead of just making big headlines that sound like they're doing something.

I agree that they should crack down on prostitution, you see all these flyers in public telephone boxes as well in our version of craiglist

they should legalize prostitution

you really can not legislate morality

It is going to happen so might as well allow it and regulate it to make it safe

How is legalising prostitution going to make prostitutes safer? Are you saying that we cannot legislate morality that we should make child rape legal? How about murder and stealing?

Regulating prostitution is to stop the spread of diseases nothing about making them safe from complete strangers

They do it in Nevada

You will always have the street walkers to deal with but there is no reason there should not be red light districts with brothels. IMO

If I am not mistaken, legal prostitution requires the use of protection, regular medical testing and legal age.

It also minimizes the amount of actual street walkers on the roads and makes them less of a target for harm.

Personally I would never use the services but if someone is really intent on finding those types of accommodations, they will seeks and find them. Might as well make them as safe as possible for all.

Also there is the taxation side of it.. Might as well tax the profession so you can medically protect and cure those who infect others.. Nice money generator as well for the sin.. :D

It's not the oldest profession for a reason and people will keep using it ..

Prostitution is a problem in a wider area than Nevada, if you were here in London, you will see how big the problem is just by using the public phone service

Just because it is "safe" in Nevada, doesn't necessarily mean it will work elsewhere. Prostitutes in Nevada aren't like Eastern European girls being duped into prostitutes against their will. I don't think legalising prostitution will make the problem go away, rather make the problem worse

What about HIV/AIDS, they are not curable

You are mixing apples with oranges

If there are people being duped and that is illegal then one deals with that

There is no reason it can not work elsewhere.

Just admit you don't like the idea for moral reasons. Nothing wrong with that by the way. So long as you don't force your morals on others.
