I have a tough time being assertive, and I tend to let people walk all over me. I have done that at work, of course, and now I have a nightmare coworker on my hands. So, all of you assertive types (aggressives probably can't help me because I don't want to get fired lol) help me out if would you??...

We have 70 people in our program. Through team emails, and court sessions, I keep track of where ALL of these people work, live, receive treatment, and drug screen. I send lists of this information to my coworkers, but things change. Everyone is privy to this information, not just me.

I just so happen to always "know" and people comment on my memory and ability to keep a lot of facts in my head at any given time.

Ok, so this guy's job is simply to keep track of 30 people who receive intensive mental health treatment. He can't seem to do this. He calls me all day every day asking me questions he should know the answers to. It's insulting, what he does.

It's not fair he makes twice my pay and I do his work, so my supervisor told me to stop enabling him. I don't feel it's my place to blast him out of the water, so I've taken her first suggestion and stopped answering his calls. He calls me no less than 5 times a day. I haven't been answering, so it ramps up the call volumes.

I'm at my wit's end because I'm stuck between my natural inclination to want to "help"...basically thinking it's my job to tell him these things even though it's not, and my annoyance with this fucking leech!

Help!

Tell him that you are sorry but his calls are interfering with your ability to do your job, and should he require further assistance he should refer to any guidance or continuity binders that cover his specific duties and program.

That's good, for sure. I wish I more readily had the ability to be assertive. Everyone hates this guy, so I have support, but I don't want my supervisor handling my issues for me. I need to get some balls and tell him he needs to do his job himself.

Want me to draft you the e-mail and you just cut and paste it? I've sent a lot of e-mails like that when I was on active duty. I don't mind. :D

Would this work?
"I appreciate that you seek me out to assist you with your caseload but I'm feeling quite overwhelmed with my own. That is why I haven't taken your calls, lately. I can't be your go to person right now."

I thought all you counselor types answered questions with questions. When he asks a questions. What do you think you should do? If silence wait. If no answer, tell him, think about it and get back to you. Put the burden on him where it should be.

ask him if he is willing to pay for any answers...$50 a crack should do it.

I totally thought of this. "I'm willing to be your assistant if you put me on a payroll." :24:

Haha he's a counselor himself! Unfortunately it's not advice answering or I'd totally do that. He's asking me "Um, do you know where my client goes for treatment? I forgot" or "Um, do you have a note if I visited such and such in the jail? I can't remember"...

All the while acting like it just slipped his mind, but we ALL know he doesn't pay attention, skips work, and has zero interest in his duties.

You could always go with the classic approach. I've tried it a few times, it works okay.

"You need to do your job, and I'll do mine. I'm not your bitch."

Pan, record him, play it to his supervisor and tell him this is interfering with your work. Mean but should be effective......, perhaps he suffers from memory problems and needs to be in treatment or on medication.......again, not your problem.

Oh she knows, she's seen it with her own eyes, he'll come in chatting everyone up, oblivious and then sneak in some questions to cover his ass. He doesn't want to be exposed as a fraud, but everyone knows. He's picked me to be his backup and I refuse to do it anymore!

The court administrator and my supervisor were cracking up at a New Year's party about what a horrible employee he is.
Not funny lol, FIRE HIM.

I think he just wants to talk to you.

Well, I go to the school he graduated from, and sometimes he will ask how class is going. When I start to answer, he pulls that "whoops! look at the time!" and runs off.

Okkkk, why ask if you don't want to know lol
