I taught one of my cats to open the doors inside the house. She'd run at it then jump on the handle and it would open - that way when she wanted out of the bedroom, she could let herself out without me getting up. I got the idea after watching a show about showbiz pets and how cats can be taught to do tricks in the same way as dogs.

Ha! That's awesome :p my parents have a big tabby and white cat called Ralph. He's a fat bastard, and not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Like, when he wants to leave a room and the door is a little ajar but not enough for him to get out, he will press his paws against the door until it clicks shut, and then meow like crazy till someone comes and opens it for him

The good thing about a cat is that you can leave them alone for days at a time. For a dog, that just isn't fair. And I really feel for dogs who spend long days alone while their owner is working.

My dog would try to sit on me. I don't care about a small cat sitting on me but a big Springer Spaniel sitting on me and licking my face is another story.

Ah my puppy is and never will be allowed on furniture. She is now also too big to sit on my knee.

I would love a dog but would never have one while I work shifts like I do. I'd constantly need someone to go in and let her out during the day since on a typical day at work I'm out the house from 0720 til 2045. I agree it's not fair for the dog.

See? That's what I'm saying about dogs being needy. They're incredibly high maintenance and I just have no use for that. I love dogs. I just don't want to own one. :)

And Kate, if you ever get a hamster, I can give you useless advice. :D I've owned 5 and know next to nothing about them. :tooth They're cute little things and a lot fun, as long as you don't end up with a biter.

I went off dogs big time after being chased by an Alsatian that escaped from someone's garden. It was barking and growling and I only ran after it starting coming towards me at speed. Some guy managed to distract it but I continued running for ages and had a panic attack outside the local primary school.

I don't have a phobia of them but I'm wary, especially of big dogs and dogs off leads.
