When you say, "I could care less" it means that you do have a level of caring about the subject at hand. When you say, "I couldn't care less" it means that you care so little about the subject that you lack the capacity to care less about it. Saying that you could care less simply doesn't make any sense if you're trying to state that you don't care about a specific subject. Thusly, when you're wanting to imply that you don't care about something, you need to utilize the couldn't version of the statement, as the could version is quite simply a silly thing to say.

My favorite public butchering of a commonly used phrase was "Well she's going to get a root of the awakening when she hears that!" ...um...do you mean RUDE awakening?? :24:

And, not to hijack, but why do people say "FUSS-trating"??? I have worked with at least 5 people who say frustrating this way on a regular basis. Every time I hear it I go :confused

I hate that people say warsh. I'm gonna warsh the dishes. There is no R in the word wash. I do not live in Warshington State.

A few years ago there was this whole long article in the newspaper about this exact thing. It was explaining how technically both phrases are correct (I disagree). Their reasoning was that "I couldn't care less" is exactly what it says and "I could care less" means "I could care less...but it's unlikely." Yeah, lame.
