Actually I'm gunna say it's a male blue-spotted hawker. There, done.

With a penis :D

No more guesses for me, that's what I think it is.

I get lots of dragonflies in Summer, they buzz around the pool lol, they're funny things, I always duck though because in the distance they look like bees flying at you, because they also love our pool :p

ok..here goes,if these 2 theories are right no-one will get tokenz.....and it might be why the dragonfly society haven't replied, they might be going more in depth to be certain

the canon forum

Interesting. it might be a parasitic fungus (google for Cordyceps and be surprised..) .

the dragonfly forum

I can't answer this with any certainty, but the object extending from the end of the abdomen looks like it could potentially be a fungal fruiting body to me. Fungal pathogens can sometimes take a while to kill invertebrates, and have been previously recorded attacking some dragonflies and damselflies (it seems that the insects have usually been found dead, but often still 'gripping' onto a perch).

Potentially this could be a very interesting discovery (if I'm right), but if it is a fungus I doubt that it can be identified without a specimen (ie. collecting the dragonfly, if it is still there, and sending it off to a fungi expert for investigation under a microscope).
