4 and 20 Blackbirds {Fall from the sky...}

So, you see... God is a universal God. It's all about love. :)
i get that - a bigger than me and you entity that espouses goodness and love, i just have not connected that being with the Bible or any "dogma" if that is the right word, I admit to never having studied or read the Bible, and frankly am turned off from doing so when I am told of the Bibles word on certain issues that to me contradict love as the acceptbale and desirable state ( homosexuality being one theme)

I understand what you are saying... Read I Corinthians 13:1-13 It really puts your verse into perspective and is a lovely passage.

But why not Buddhism? Surely Buddhism is a more loving religion.

But then you can ask the question, why any religion?

I'm an atheist, not an agnostic, but an atheist. Yet love is very much a part of my life.
I can honestly say that my wife and I are deeply in love and have been since we met. We are unlike the vast majority of couples in our bond. There is no infidelity, no fighting, no sarcasm or any other crap to divide us. The absolute love and devotion to my children can't be dismissed. I am there for them every night. I spend time with them, teach them, play with them and love them with all my heart. They are growing up in a family that loves them and it will show as they become adults. Hopefully they will pass that love on to their children as I know they will. I come from a loving family and there is still a connection between us.
And I could go into my love for my neighbors and fellow man but my caring for others makes me nothing more than a flaming liberal in others eyes... you know, those die hard republican Christians that think everyone should just do for themselves. (not a lot of love there IMO)

Yet this is all without religion... So how does religion = love, or I guess the better question is, since religion doesn't make loving people, why is it important to you? Or is it just a prerequisite and not the reason you are religious?

I'm really enjoying this conversation, Tim. :)

The word "religion" has always been a turn off for me. I feel as though that word alone, is what muddies the waters for the majority of people. We're not meant to choose a "religion" to follow. We're meant to choose God/Jesus, to follow. Just keep it simple, folks.

Yes, all of 1 Corinthians 13 is beautiful, as it exemplifies what love is meant to be... however, that last verse says a lot. Let's read it again... "Now abides, faith, hope and love... but, the greatest of these is love." The Lord said that, agreed? So, He's putting love above FAITH. (Faith in Him, if you want to take it a step further.) In essence, if we truly love, in all aspects of our lives, the love opens our hearts, and minds. When you have an open heart and mind, the sky is the limit (Pun intended. ;) )
Our world is going down the crapper because of the lack of love for one another. Period. End of story. Until (and it won't happen) we return to kindness and love for our fellow man, this world is not going to change.

I can get bitchy with the rest of them... hell, Jesus threw a stomp down fit at the temple... remember? But, once I've had my bitch fest, I'm still that loving person that I've always been.

Is it a prerequisite? I think so, yes. Without love... what does one have?

You MUST include the word religion into this conversation. For without religion there is no Jesus, just a higher being.

It is religion that you are talking about here. The words spoken in I Corinthians are only to be believed IF you believe in the Christian religion. Otherwise Jesus was never there to say those things.

So we need to be careful here, we cannot remove religion from the topic because it's religion we are talking about. :)

Guess I should have taken it a bit further. What I meant by "religion" was all of the different religions to choose from that fall under the "Christian" umbrella. Ie... Baptist, Pentecostal, Methodist, Lutheran, Catholic, etc.

:)

I'm not ignoring you, porterjack. I'm multi-tasking, and shouldn't be. :)

My 12 year old has been in a Basketball Shootout Tournament for over a week now, and I'm behind the scenes getting our schedule dialed in. I'll respond to your post when I have the time, maybe later tonight? The reason I say "when I have the time", is because I know it'll be a lengthy discussion. :) (And a good one, at that!)

all in good time, and no worries, i agree a good discussion, far too often these kind of talks get distorted and people stop reading the real intent of any given question, i dont sense that here, more of a sharing than a lecturing, thanks for that

I swear modern technology is going to be our doom. We have way too much info that gets reacted on way to quickly.
alvin toffler in 'future shock' saw the disease at least 40 years ago.

did you notice that the kills were all in areas likely to be heavily impacted by human habitation and/or heavy industry? i'm surprised that there haven't been more reported from brazil and argentina or central africa with all the mining and lumbering they're doing.
