when my TPS went, it would run kinda ok, but when I would let off the gas it would just die, and it was hard to start sometimes. So when I would come up to a light in traffic, I had to keep my foot on the gas and the brake, and even then it was a damn crap shoot.

I didn't think of the TPS. All them fuggin sensors make it hard to e-diagnose something like this.

If you can get the car to an AutoZone, have them hook up a code reader and see what code you are getting. That will tell you what the hell is going on. My Taurus had the same thing happen and it was a $12 part that went. It was the TPS throttle position sensor. Taurus's are known to have these go bad, and your onboard computer needs feedback from the TPS to idle the car properly. DON'T just start replacing parts that you might think it is when you haven't checked the cars codes. You will end up just throwing money away

If you really are serious about learning about fixing your car, buy a Haynes manual for your car. Make sure it matches your model and year, also pick up a code reader that you can plug in and read your own codes, you should be able to get one under $40.

She doesnt have a check engine light on. The only time the light is on is when the car dies, however that happens with every car. The manuals are $19.99 here (Haynes and Chiltons). She has the 3.0 Pushrod SOHC engine. LS version.

whats a TPS? come on use noob speak guys :p

Your car has a computer that is constantly checking the status of the engine and adjusts it accordingly. One of the things is does is adjusts your fuel mixture. In the morning when the engine is cold, your engine needs a richer mix of gas (more gas, less air) to run smooth. As the engine warms up it leans the mixer out (giving it the same amount of gas while letting in more air) Older cars with carburetors use to accomplish this with a choke that would reduce the amount of air going into the engine. The computer in todays cars also checks everything from air temp, air pressure, engine temp, etc. With this information it will adjust the engines timing (when the spark should ignite the fuel in the cylinder) adjust the fuel injectors (how much fuel and when to deliver the blast of fuel) and several other things. Well your TPS (throttle position sensor) tells the computer exactly how much the throttle (stepping on the gas peddle to put it simply) is open. If the computer doesn't know this key piece of information, it won't know the rest of the settings, so your timing can be off, your fuel mixture can be off and so many other things, the car will run like crap (if you can keep it running at all)

You can read the basics of what your computer in the car can do here.

The check engine light doesn't have to be lit to have engine codes. There can be stored codes that can be read with the code reader. I'm not 100% but I don't think the check engine light came on when my TPS went bad.

Her car has duel overhead cams not single. You also can't have pushrods with OHC's

Thats what you said on the phone when I was workin on my bike. LOL

Check engine lights come on if there is an issue and can stay on for up to 40 run cycles post incident. There are always codes stored in the computer when you scan them. One code is system check and the other code is end.

SOHC = No pushrods
DOHC = No pushrods
OHV = pushrods and rocker arms

If hers is the Vulcan engine, which would make more sense, then it has OHV's with pushrods and rocker arms, but she doesn't have a SOHC, it's not an option.

hmm. it sounds like it couldnt hurt for me to get the free diagnostic at autozone, so i will do that when i go purchase the part, if it turns out it needs changing. They can tell me whats wrong with it there for sure, right?

yes, if it's a bad sensor (TPS, 02, MAFS, etc) it should show up in the error codes.
