A 10-year-old Florida girl faces felony weapons charges after bringing a small steak knife to school to cut up her lunch, according to a report on MyFOXOrlando.com. According to the report, a couple of teachers took the utensil and called authorities, who arrested the girl and took her to the county’s juvenile assessment center.

Students sitting next to the girl at lunch say she didn't threaten anyone with the knife; she just used it to cut up her food.

These zero tolerance polices are just utterly ridiculous. This is a case where people should be sued. The teachers, the school district and the police. :mad

Actually I agree with it .. parents shouldn't send weapons to school with their children. All it takes is one bad kid to get it and do some damage.

Her mother should have cut the damn steak up before she packe dher lunch. I mean, good fucking grief ..a 10 yr old does not need a steak knife on her person .. ever .. period.

My 11 yr old isn't even allowed to cut his own steak .. kids don't need to use knives.

idiot parents.

Excuse me but no where in my post did I say you cannot kill a person with a steak knife. I said it is not a weapon but can be used as one just like a pencil or a pen. I bet you could kill a person with a pen just as effectively as with a steak knife. Just ask a prison guard.

A knife is mostly definately a weapon no matter what the "name" of the knife happens to be .. they are used to kill/maim/and cut. Pencils and pens are not. Sure they can be used as a weapon .. but that is not their intended purpose.

A 10 yr old child isn't going to weild enough force/have the general knowledge of human anatomy needed to kill a person with a pen or pencil, in most cases (a high school student could, but it would still require that they transform the pen/pencil into a weapon by sharpening it).

All it takes is one small jab or slice with a steak knife to kill a person .. teacher or child.

A knife has NO place inside a school on a child's person. Ever.

You do not need anatomical knowledge or much strength to shove a pen into a person's throat. I have even read articles about kids holding pencils who trip and have it lodged into their hearts.
When I go to Bath and Beyond to by a knife set, I am not buying a weapons cache, I am buying utensils.
Also the little girl was just cutting her steak. She was not running around with it, playing with it or waving it at anybody. If they felt it was inappropriate for her to have it then they should have just taken it away and contacted her parents to let them know that she cannot bring it to school. Calling the cops and arresting her is just ridiculous.

ok i have to say here. when i was in 4th grade i did the SAME thing. My teacher saw the knife, but it was kept in my lunchbox along with my fork. I brought it because i knew the plastic utensils at school wouldn't cut my meat. Honestly though I wasnt thinking of it being considered a weapon, and back then no one suspected a 4th grader to do something crazy with a freaking table knife. My teacher saw it and told me next time not to bring it, but that was it. She didn't even take it from me. I just said ok, and that was that.

I agree! While having a knife in class is not acceptable, using one for it's stated purpose should be!! If there is any case to answer then the parents should be held accountable. Charging a 10 year old with a felony for eating her lunch is outright ridiculous!!!

Bottom line here is, a pencil and pen are required of a student in a school. A damn serrated steak knife is not. It's illegal to carry a knife in school. This kids' parents should have known better unless they're idiots and never watch the news.

I don't care what the hell she was doing with it. IT IS AN UNNECESSARY OBJECT IN A SCHOOL.

NO KNIVES, NO GUNS.

Period. What stopped her parents from cutting her lunch up at home? Why did she wait?

Because her parents are fucking idiots, that's why.

The child knows not to bring them to school .. so does the parent .. it's BOTH of their fault. They both need punishment. My 11 yr old knows better than to stick a knife in his lunchbox.

When you do things that are against school rules .. you need to be made an example of .. so NO ONE ELSE does it. If the school did nothing .. every kid that wanted to would be bringing knives to school "for their lunches" .. and then you'd start ending up with dead kids.

It is a SERIOUS issue in schools .. otherwise THEY WOULDN'T HAVE BANNED THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Think about that. Kids are out there killing kids every day .. WHY would you want to give them an extra means to easily continue to do so.

If they use a pen or pencil .. that's a shame .. but if they use a knife they brought from home .. it could have EASILY prevented!

I DO NOT want knives at my son's school .. it is COMPLETELY unnecessary .. they DO NOT NEED knives at school. A steak is EASILY cut up at home before packing the lunch.

What about plastic knives? Should a child be expelled or arrested for having one of those? It has been known to happen. Overreacting because a rule is broken does nobody good.
A better approach would have been to inform the parents that was not allowed and then send letters home to all parents making sure they knew it was not allowed. Calling the cops on a 10 year old because she was cutting her steak with a knife is beyond the extreme.

Yes, sending a letter home sure does curb incidents like these across the country like a national paper does reporting on the arrest.

*not*

You make an example of someone, it'll hopefully wake up thousands more to this and keep parents from being dumb enough to put a steak knife in a kids lunchbox.

Everyone knows that this type happening has been sensationalized across the media for several years now .. everyone KNOWS they are NOT allowed on school premises andthey are not supposed to send them to school.

How many notes are they supposed to send?

Oh wait, I know .. I guess they can write 1 note explaining to a grieving parent why their child died after being stabbed.

I mean for heaven's sake the girl sitting next to Billy brought the knife to cut her steak up .. it's not Suzie's fault or her parent's fault that Billy stole it and used it after 3rd period to kill Johnny in the bathroom; because Johnny had been making fun of Billy in 1st period for the last month.

:smiley24: please .. knives are NOT needed in schools. There are no instances where they are needed. This is nothing mroe than people not wanting to conform to the rules .. they only want to be able to have them .. because someone says they can't.

People need to GROW UP and get over themselves.

And also .. at age 10 you cannot receive a "felony" .. you cannot be tried as an adult at 10 yrs old.

Not an over reaction IMO, thing is the parents are the ones who should be charged by allowing their child to take a steak knife to school!!
