What are the pros and cons of your camera?

I ask because hopefully this Thursday or possibly Friday at the latest I'm going to buy one...I've had my eye on two brands...the sony and the canon. I own a sony now and love it but its old and is in need of replacement.

These are the three I have been focusing on for a VERY long time:

Sony Alpha 350K 14.2MP DSLR Camera With 18-70mm Lens Kit $650 :thumbup

Sony Alpha 200K 10.2MP DSLR Camera With 18-70mm Lens Kit $550

or

Canon EOS 12.2MP Rebel XSi SLR Digital Camera With 18-55mm IS Lens Kit $730

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1MP DSLR Camera With 18-55mm IS Lens Kit $530

They are all on sale right now...my fav being the sony Alpha 350k is $200 off:eek:thumbup:nod:....and I know they rated these two brands the best...BUT what is everyone else using and why?

I have a Sony Cybershot. It takes stunning scenics, but it's an older model and doesn't have the zoom I would like...plus, it's the model just before they developed the technology to prevent shaking...so my night shots are often shit. But, I would get the upgraded version...my pictures are typically very nice on that cam.

yeah the prices are good on them...I'm so excited to see all the ones I like on sale...AND with the add on of the lenses.

when i bought mine way back when, my old one, it cost me thousand bucks so I've been reluctant to replace it until now....it wouldn't focus for me last night, so its time...poor things given up its ghost. It just about ten years old now, so its done a good job.

been some great reviews on those cams as well.... so it does night shots? Thats something I should look into as well, been lots of times when I wanted to take a shot of the sunset but couldn't as the light wasn't enough.

I have a Nikkon D80 with the standard lens and then bought the Nikkon 70-300mm zoom.

I started out at your range and then as is typical with me decided to up the price.

You do realize these are bigger cameras then the point and shoot I assume.

I like mine. It has a lot of bells and whistles. There is so much I have yet to learn.

One thing that may be a consideration is I think I saw that Canon was in financial trouble and there were concerns about bankruptcy. Not positive as I can not find anything now about it.

Mine has night settings, but it doesn't have the anti shake technology...so you really have to be still or use a tripod. However, the newer ones are much much better...my dad has a newer model and it takes lovely night shots. My mom has a sony as well...I can't recall the model but it's much fancier than my dads...her's is the shizzle!

the quality of the lens can determine night shots too. whatever camera you get you would want to keep in mind the lens you get may not be interchangeable with other makes down the road. lens you would hope to buy one time and re use

yeah I remember reading something on Sony about a year ago and I was sad about that...was it recent you read that Bill? If so then I'll probably reconsider the sony purchase. I'm biased and really do like sony when it comes to digital.

The Sony digital cam I have now is a big one, was top of its line back in the day....I don't care for little cameras, I like to know I'm holding something. LOL

I'll get the model that my mom has...I'm sure they've upgraded it because she got it a year or so ago...but you'll be able to research in the same sort of class as that...

interesting to see Nikon is making the list now...see my sony and canon still make top three...

PCmag puts a name I'm not familiar with as top rating...makes you wonder if they are getting money for the reviews...lol

Elsa I get the impression you are not one to do things 2nd rate. The lens is from what I understand more important than the Camera. My camera cost about $900 back early this year. I shopped around and found it cheapest on the internet. The price on it has come down a bit since then. I paid about $600 for the zoom lens. I assume the lens you refer to is the 15-55mm?? Trust me you will be looking for a zoom lens in a hurry :D

I thought I mentioned that I heard Canon was having financial problems. Not Sony.

I looked at all three stocks and they all are down significantly:(

Oh right...you do say Canon in your post...LOL...sorry about that...then yes both are hvaing or had issues...although I wasn't familiar with Canon having them too.....well I suppose in todays economic crisis its to be expected.

I do take my time on things like this Bill as its something I don't think you should go cheap on...quality is best.

Yes the lens thats on sale is 15-70mm, plus the cam on its own does ...i think i recall it saying 15x optical zoom. But yes I do have my eye on another lens which is close to the amount of what I will pay for the cam itself...but I'll have to see... I've given myself only a thousand dollars to play with for my camera budget.

The canon feels unbalanced in my hands...so if I go that route I'll need a tripod I think...which I do believe I have one just don't know which box its stored away in. The sony on the other hand feels lovely and has more options from what I have read up on it....plus I have to take into consideration battery life and memory .

I've thought about buying from online, but I'm honestly scared of getting something broken... so I'm willing to pay the extra to get it directly from the shop here in town. Its Future Shop thats holding the sales...they are usually the more expensive too....but 200 off i can't pass that up.

none digitals can still be some of the best out there...just costs more to get things developed i think.

you can buy some little digitals that do an alright job for under 100 bucks...nothing professional but they do the trick when you just want to have something to practice with...I bought my son one of those 19 dollar ones that you are supposed to leave in your car for accidents...works good enough for him to play with and it seconds as a webcam...which I haven't tried with it yet....he has fun with it...BUT it does go through a lot of AAA batteries....maybe too many.:D
