Oregon attorney slaps cop with illegal parking complaint

PORTLAND, Ore. -- An attorney who watched a police officer park illegally in front of a restaurant, then wait around while his meal was prepared, issued the officer a series of citizen-initiated violations.

Eric Bryant said he was sitting at the restaurant March 7 when Officer Chad Stensgaard parked his patrol car next to a no-parking sign and walked inside to wait for his food, the Portland Mercury reported Thursday.

Bryant told the weekly paper that when he asked Stensgaard about his car, the officer asked Bryant, "If someone broke into your house, would you rather have the police be able to park in front of your house or have to park three blocks away and walk there?"

Bryant filed a complaint as a private citizen alleging several violations, including illegal parking and illegal operation of an emergency vehicle.
Stensgaard was issued a summons to appear in traffic court in May. The fines could total $540.

"Citizens should be concerned that he used his status as an officer of the law as justification for breaking the law," Bryant said.

Cathe Kent, a spokeswoman for the Portland Police Bureau, said Stensgaard would fight the complaint in court, "as he rightfully should."
Parking is limited on city streets, especially with many construction projects downtown, she said, and officers remain on duty even when they are picking up food.

"We are emergency responders and need to be ready to take an emergency call," Kent said Saturday.

This guy is some kind of "new fool." Hope he never needs the cops.

There's no need for an emergency vehicle to break the law, unless there is a real emergency. In this case, there was no emergency. Get 'em..

I work for the military as a civilian. I also have no idea what that has to do with this..

Just the huge negative opinion you have of police, I just figured that if you were in the military at soe point, I would note the concept that at a much higher level, the military is a police force of sorts, with better weapons and a much larger budget.

Oh and aircraft and bombs.:D

lol! Try telling one of our officers that they're just another cop....... Then duck.

I have a low opinion of police officers from my personal experience with police. Yeah yeah, I know that not all are bad. I do have police friends. But the majority of cops are wankers. Though anyone given that kind of power always finds it hard not to let it go to their head.

It's cool, it's cool. I was just gonna mess with ya:D

And I agree, I normally have had nothing but good experiences with them, of course I have never actually had a "run in" with any of them.

So it's not fair for me to judge to be honest. I have to take everyone elses word for it:D

:)

I've hard too many run-ins with police in 3 different countries..

Some people tend to not understand, too, that when officers/firefighters/medics are on their lunch break they don't get a lunch break like other people do. Just b/c they call out on lunchbreak doesn't mean they get to stay on it...if the poop hits the rotary cooling device they have to go back to work and forget their meal break. That doesn't mean they can't still park legally, but I have no problem w/ where they park b/c I'd much rather them be able to get to their vehicle or any equipment in it if an emergency DOES arise while they are supposedly "on their break."

They knew about the lunch breaks before they signed up for the job.

And if there's no parking spots, go somewhere else.
