Fifth-Grader Collapses, Dies At School

YADKINVILLE, N.C. -- A West Yadkin Elementary fifth-grader who suffered from a history of heart problems died Wednesday morning at school, the school system said.

Superintendent Jim Benfield told WXII the student, identified as Dakota Gregory, collapsed around 11:30 a.m. while he was walking along a track on the campus during a break time.

Benfield said school personnel unsuccessfully tried CPR and a defibrillator on the boy. Gregory, who was from Hamptonville, was taken to Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville, where he was pronounced dead.
West Yadkin Elementary principal Charles Conner sent a letter home to parents notifying them of the incident.
The school system also said they had brought in grief counselors for the children at the school.
