unemployment compensation??

So I am wondering about unemployment compensation...is this a state or federal thing in the US? Also, does anyone know what the criteria are to qualify for filing for unemployment? What is the minimum length of employment before filing for unemployment wages? If anyone knows anything please share! I am googling but its a bunch of legal mumbojumbo that i dont really understand. thanks!
 
well im going to call HR tomorrow and cover my ass. My boss has been harrassing me for a while now and i finally stood up to him last week for the first time...now he tells me i have an "attitude problem". I am a very nice person, I don't just take an attitude with someone because I don't like them...I'm jsut tired of being discriminated against and harassed by him. I'm going to start taking notes and keeping track of what he says to me word by word.
 
I thought the general rule everywhere is you had to be laid off. My old place of employment had a problem with a kid who said he got laid off when in actuality he had gotten fired. He was trying to collect unemployment without the boss knowing but unfortunately he wasn't very bright and got caught.

Jeezus what an asshole. I'm so sorry. To be really happy, but to have some jerk be this way to you at the same time.
 
In AL you have to be laid off or fired. You pay taxes that support unemplyment .. so when you get fired you are owed unemployment compensation. I think you have to have worked somewhere between 6 months and a year.

I'm extremely serious here Clare, call the EEOC and discuss with them your situation NOW. EEOC is the Equal Employment Opportunity Commisson .. it is a Federal agency, not state, and the laws it protects do not vary from state to state either.

Pregant women are akin to a person with a disability .. and discrimination against them is HIGHLY unethical. You should contact them NOW before anything else happens. Get your complaint in writing with them .. that way if anything happens and you lose your job you have a solid case against them for compensation until you find another job.

You need to voice your concern now, not tomorrow, not next Friday, but now. If you don't get the ball rolling, you will not have the safety net in place if they drop your ass.

And yes, keep track of everything he says.
 
sooooo...today he would NOT stop picking at me....it got to the point where another teller took me aside and asked me why he was picking on me so much...i told her i dont know...and then i got extremely pissed off...i tried to think that maybe i was the only one that noticed and maybe some of it was in my head, but when other people are coming and bringing it up to me i know its not just me. So tonight we had a meeting. He gave us a piece of paper and asked us to write down what we disliked about our branch. I wrote this:
"Omar, I don't appreciate you slapping my butt. I don't understand why you always choose to pick on me and single me out, it's not right and I don't think it's fair that you always pick me out when I am doing the SAME things as everyone else. You have tellers who are breaking the rules by not obtaining proper ID for customers, and then you want to bitch at me all day for eating an apple slice behind the teller line when there were no customers? I don't hate you but right now your actions really bother me and you jsut get under my skin and piss me off. I want to transfer to another branch."

ok so MAYBE not the smartest move on my part...i didnt really think before i wrote that I was just so pissed off and reacted. Either way he will probably let me transfer, because he knows now that i have called the attention to him harrassing me, and if he doesn't do what I want, then I will call HR. I wrote all this down and he is probably going to read it tonight...I'm sure some major drama is going to go down tomorrow at work after he reads it....I'm kind of nervous. Hopefully he will just allow me to transfer, it would be the least painful for him and me.
 
I haven't called HR yet because I've been at work, and I didn't want to put the situation on blast like that for everyone to hear about. I guess it doesn't really matter though...HR is open from 9-5 and everytime I have ever called them I've been on hold for like 20 mins at least...I need to find some time where I can actually call.

While you may be correct with everything else, ethics have no place here. Ethics won't get her unemployment. Only legality.

i think you did the right thing by bringing it up. now he knows that he is on the line. and you have co-workers to back you up on this. im behind you 100%

She still has a job, she's just afraid she's gonna get fired for talking back to her boss .. the ethics part is because she is pregnant .. and that is a disability .. and they are treating her unfairly (no breaks, no lunch, not allowing he to sit at all) .. so if she files with the EEOC and then he fires her .. no matter if her state allows for unemployment compensation or not (like Haus's doesn't) .. she'll still be more qualified to receive "something".

You need to read her other threads concerning this same matter before jumping in ;).
 
We do get lunch breaks, btw. My boss says that he doesn't HAVE to give us lunches, and tells us that its a privelege not a right.

Anyways...today I tried calling HR on my lunch and my freaking cell phone died while i was on hold!!!! UGH! So today he would hardly make eye contact with me. Finally he tried to come tell me to get off my butt and stand up...i whipped out my Dr's note and put it in his face...it says that i should be allowed to sit down at work when i need to because i am supposed to be "taking it easy" for the week...well then he called me back into the vault to talk to me, and he says "I don't care if you sit down when we don't have customers, btu you need to stand when there are customers"...umm dude its fuckin friday. Wehn do we not have a 10 person or more line all damn day?! I didn't say that, I just said ok, and left it alone, and i will add it to my list of grievances. That's SERIOUS BLACK AND WHITE discrimination right there...HELLO dr note...and then being told no? wtf
