I've been thinking lately that maybe the time has come for Corrections and I to part ways. It's a combination of a lot of stuff, the emotional abuse of the job, the constant investigations into your character, and the fact that inmates have more rights and privileges than the real hard working Americans has disheartened me and made me question if this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.

I was looking into a couple things and I came across some information on EMT's. I know a few, and it is something that I'm interested in doing. But, it's a big step to completely change my career path, especially at this stage in my life. I was wondering if any of you had any thoughts Or if there were any EMT's here maybe?
 
I know that EMT's don't stay EMT's very long. They get trained as an EMT. They work as an EMT for usually no more than 4 years and then go back to school or change jobs altogether. The industry doesn't seem to be able to keep them there very long. I don't know why as I am not an EMT, but I go to school with a lot of them that have returned to school. Also in one of my medical industry classes we went over the lifetime of some of the medical careers out there and that is the information they gave us.
 
I'd heard that from a friend of mine. He started as an EMT and now he's a Surgical Tech. He said that it's a good starting off point to see if the medical field is where you want to be. He also said that as an EMT you see some of the most horrible things, so if you can handle that, you're good to go anywhere else in the field LOL!

But I thought of EMT for now because the schooling for it is only 8 weeks, and it's only on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm. That's good cause I can still work during the week. I want to stay in the fields of helping people, even though some think Corrections don't help people, it's performing a service to the community. EMT's definitely help the community!
 
now i understand..obvious when you know isnt it?

i think it would be rewarding and stressful at times but imagine each day would be different and the thrill of getting there and saving a life..that in itself couldnt be beaten

That's what I was thinking, the thrill of saving someone's life. But I worry about how I'd feel if I lost someone. :(
 
At what stage in your life? LOL You arent very old and I've heard of many people much older than you who change careers because it's not fulfilling to them. My cousins husband is a fireman/EMT/police officer...

LOL I meant because I've been to college twice already, and I thought I was done! :24:
 
what ever you learn or any training you get is always useful ,its not wasted .

and if you lost someone then you have the knowledge that YOU tried your best for them and made their passing dignified and easy...so it sounds good to me.dont ever beat yourself up for doing your best ,its a gift you would be giving;)

Injuries and blood I see all the time in the prison. I've seen an inmate get his throat cut from ear to ear, nearly decapitating him. I have had feces and urine and spunk thrown at me, I've cleaned up vomit and copious amounts of blood and other bodily fluids. HOWEVER....other than inmates cutting each other, I haven't seen a lot of other stuff. I don't know that I could handle seeing a hurt or possibly dying child. That's something I will probably have a big problem with.
 
EMTs are always in need here. The thing that sucks about it, is they dont get paid NEAR enough of what they deserve to be paid. Out there saving lives, seeing all kinds of crap and doing all they do, you would think they would be paid as much as a nurse, but nope.
But I think thats a good thing that you have a heart to want to do something like that. And if where you live is like here, if the EMTs get sick of working on the truck, they always have the option of working in the ER too as a tech.

Ok. You know what? If your mind is on it and you want to consider a career change I guess there's no harm in going for it. You say the schooling is only for 8 weeks right? Saturdays. That's very short. You have nothing to lose really but something to gain. Can't go wrong with more knowledge.

If your mind is on it then go for it. You'll have one more thing under your belt. You could get a job in it and if you like it, fine. If not, you could always get back a job in what you were doing with the added advantage of the EMT qualifications and experience.

Don't worry about a complete change of career!! I spent 15 years as a lab technician for Royal Doulton, but when they closed everything down and moved production to Indonesia I moved jobs in a big way and went to run after-school playschemes for 5-12 year olds! After 3 years there I was offered another job and now am assistant manager at a pub and could be running my own pub within the year!! If the chance arises you have to grab it with both hands and hang on tight!!!!

This is something that you're never really going to be sure about until it happens! Just think how it will feel if you can save that child!



In the end, if opportunity knocks then open the door and invite it in!!!!:nod:
