I want to make this thread in the science section for the simple reason that I want to see the evidence behind the argument.

I don't want to see any arguing for or against religion. I want this to be a "fact" filled thread, we will leave God out of this discussion. We can discuss that in the Philosophy & Debate section.

*Warning* If any posts step out of the arena of science and into debate territory, they will be removed by BadBoy or myself. Thank you for playing along.

My belief is that the earth is millions of years old. There is plenty of evidence that points to this claim. I have yet to see any evidence to the contrary but am open to all points of view.

I will lay out some of my evidence as the thread gets going.

there are human remains older than six thousand years old.

all else failed 's video says it all.

the arguments for 6000years sound scientific and plausable to anyone with very little education but can be swiftly discreditted.

my daughter is named after mitochondrial eve.her remains were discovered just before i gave birth.this skeleton was 60,000 years old...all of the mitochondria in her bones are linked to all of us.

and on ,and on,and on.:)

But the remains that are 60,000 years old are dated with a process called "carbon dating" this process has been called unreliable by those who argue against an earth that is millions of years old. They claim the remains are only thousands of years old...

That is the side I want to hear from. I want to know what science there is to back it up... not from a defensive position, but from a position of knowledge.

i was going to say that about the remains i mentioned but carbon dating was brought up and then i couldnt be arsed with even mentioning the layers of rock from which mitochondrial eve was found.

and i cant spell mitochondrial:(

Okay, well since nobody wants to step out there.

I say between 3 and 4 billion years old.

First piece of evidence, the oldest know rock found was Radiometrically dated to be between 3.8 and 3.9 billion years old.

The estimate, is 4.5 billion years old on earth, give or take about 1% by current estimates.

There, shot one.

:homo:

Every Science type thing I've ever read indicates that the earth is around 4 billion years old.

And, it needs to be said, and I guess I will say it.

There is was and always will be descrepancy surrounding the soundness of Radiocarbon dating. Strictly due to the methods it employs, given that it measures something that was alive and no longer is.

Radiometric dating is virtually impossible to argue based on the concepts under which it works. Simply pu ti measures an elapsed time period since a radiometric clock was "reset" and this can be accomplished via the use of various elements for measurement purposes.

Again, just to make clear the distinction between Radiocarbon and Radiometric dating for the use of this thread.

I say millions of years old.

You think about how long a billion years is .. and then you think about how long stuff lasts these days. You think anything from today will be around in a billion years? I seriously doubt it. Things rot, decompose, dissolve, erode, and various other things that remove things into dust/oblivion.

I have a hard time believing some of the dating tools/systems/formulas/theories (did I cover enough words to properly make my point? lol) are completely accurate .. based soley on their relaibility being on human decifering, understanding, reasoning, and ability.

But I don't discredit them completely tho.
