I have no idea when that part of the vampire myth became integrated, but originally it was far simpler, just being bit would do it.

I guess Dracula would be the most accurate of modern interpretations of the vampire mythology, and in the book transformations could take weeks - even months if they were halted and slowed by garlic flowers and the such.

I think it's interesting, too...but then I watched that crappy "Interview with a Vampire" movie and I was disappointed. But then I found "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (the show, not the movie) and I got interested again.
