I was walking the dog this morning and I happened to walk past a load of horse chestnut trees. The ground below was absolutely littered with conkers. When I was a kid you would never see the ground heavily littered with conkers because kids would collect them to have conker fights with, now it seems they are not bothered by that, would probably rather be stuck indoors glued to their latest computer game. Really seems like kids have lost their imagination and need to be entertained rather than making their own entertainment.:(

The seeds of horse chestnut trees. When I was a kid we used to have conker fights, you make a hole through you conker and run a bit of string through it. You then take turned bashing your opponents conker with it until one breaks and the owner of the unbroken one is the winner.

Hail the Conkering Hero

your very right Peter it's very sad that some grown up's don't seem to remember the things that made them oh so very happy when they were kids to pass it on to their kids , i'm always telling my kids thing i did as a kid and they have a blast playing old games that i played , plus i love taking them fishing and camping and just spending time in the woods , getting back to nature is very important to me and they love it , so many kids have never even seen a frog a salamander or a turtle in the wild all the thing that made life great when i was a kid , as long as i'm around my kids will know what those things are , the woods was one of the most important parts of my life and still is .;) ps thanks for starting this thread .;)

when i was a kid, me and my friends used to spend all day playing in the woods. we built our own BMX course in the woods and we would ride out there all day long. if we werent doing that, we used some sticks and pretend we were shooting each other in a game of war pretending the sticks were guns. fun times :)

It is sad. I couldn't agree more.

All we can do is make a difference with our own kids.

Unfortunately many parents don't these days, TV and video games are their babysitters.

When I was a kid we built tree houses that were across the street from one another. And we'd have 'conker wars' between the two forts. Loads of fun!

I used to play outside a lot.
We'd ride bikes everywhere. I never had my own bike, but there was always one to borrow. We'd go in the woods, and find every kind of animal we could. There was a little pond that we went to, that had a zillion frogs in it...and snakes. :) There was a creek too, with minnows and tadpoles. We'd climb trees. And someone always had some fort they were building. We'd play hide-n-seek, 4-square, handball or hit tennis balls against the side of the school. I guess I got to play a lot of things as a kid, never really thought about that much.

I miss playing rundown... that was always so much fun until one of us got tagged on the back of the head with a baseball.

Then it was funny.

I think you must mean sweet chestnuts which look similar and taste yummy! Believe me if you tried to eat conkers you'd probably throw up!:yuk
