America the Beautiful - 1913
Katharine Lee Bates

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife.
Who more than self the country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America ! America !
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life !
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

You dont think anyone died when we suceeded from England? You dont think people starved to death and froze to bring their family over here where it was safe and free? They created a beautiful nation for us and our children's children. Every single day since then, men and women have put their lives on the line to protect these rights and freedoms. To them, I say thanks.

alleycat, chill. I thought Alicia's post was pretty funny, it made me laugh :D Besides, why is this being posted today? It's JULY 3RD. Don't we usually celebrate on JULY 4TH?

Damn, it's the internet, don't get so pissed off.

well i know why i celebrate the 4th. And it's not because of the soldiers...which really didn't have to do with the dec. of I. but oh well. It wasn't safe and free before they signed that paper...and most people weren't flocking like cattle over here. freedom came afterwards. we're celebrating the day it was signed. try thanking those people, they are the ones that gave us the reason to celebrate july 4th. and we're not fighting for any freedom today. we already have it...well with what the president gives us, which seems to be limited.

So the revolutionary fighters didn't die so that declaration of independence could be signed? You don't have the US without soldiers somewhere in history dying for the cause.

We should be thanking the enlightenment and its great thinkers actually for our freedom. Soldiers were important, but without enlightenment era ideas this country would have never been founded on the principles it was founded on.

They died to rid themselves of oppressive British rule, not necessarily for a separate country. Most states didn't even want to be separate from the British. Those who fought in the revolutionary war were actually the minority. I'm glad they fought though. I hate tea.
