So last year I owed federal, and H&R block charged me $80 dollars for 1 hour of work.

This year, I got $967 back from state and federal on my taxes. What does H&R block do? They fucking charge me 142 dollars to do my tax prep... for a HALF HOUR.

$90 for fed, $52 for state. What a fucking rip off. Had I known I was going to pay out my ass for them to do .5 hours of work, I would have bought turbo tax for 60 bucks and done it myself this year.

Fortunately next year my sister in law will be a tax preparer and I can get them done for $20 bucks through her.

H&R block can be such a fucking rip off, and the sad part is we do their damn phone work every year, what a giant goddamn hassle it was... They decided to put one person in charge of getting their phone lines straightened out... across the country.

This one person never returned calls, either. Got really snobby with us and treated us like we're garbage. No discounts for saving the company 7000 a year in the NE Indiana area, I take it?

So now basically when I get my $967 back, I have already spent $142 of it on these clowns.

I guess this wasn't so much as a tax rant as a tax preparation rant. Unless you can get discounts, don't use H&R block.

But at least I'm almost done with the paperwork and shit to get my house. Pretty much all that is left is the appraisal/inspections, final paperwork and the exchanging of my keys. smile.gif

Isn't your $142 fee tax deductible? It would be here, but then two completely different tax systems.

And what's with having to do two different tax returns, federal and state?

We pay 5 different taxes off each check.

Federal, State, SS, and two others I can't recall. You get returns from your specific state (I live in Indiana) and federal.

I don't do them myself because its easier for them to wander around my forms since this year I had a K1 form because I'm a shareholderr in a company.

We're pretty lucky over here - only one tax system & you can do your returns online for free. They have a fairly simple Q & A tax form setup which does all the calculations & even lodges it electronically.

The best part is if you make an honest mistake in filling out the form they promise not to fine you. I've been using eTax for years now.

In Tennessee we don't have a state income tax, only federal but our sales tax is 9.75%.
James why don't you e-file for a Helluva lot less than what you're paying? H&R Block can go chew on one.

isn't that h&r's business model though? They charges based on a percentage of your tax return? I don't know as I've never had someone else do my taxes, but it seems pretty logical to me. They are in it to make money. I'm curious as to why you didn't ask them how they charged up front?

if all the taxes i paid were just to benefit this country and it's legle citizens i'd be alright with taxes, and if it were that way our tax would be cut by more then half and not going up.;)

Because I didn't think it would be THIS expensive this year, vs not having the money to buy turbotax (off a credit card), vs I thought I was going to be able to get 40 dollars off, plus 15 dollars back, plus a 20 dollar rebate.

I only got the 20 rebate, which is bullshit.

Then what about last year when I owed the Feds? lol

They do it by forms, I had W2s and K1s to prepare. Which meant nothing... but I think I had a sheet on what costs what.

I agree completely. Taxation is theft.

We can do our tax returns online here? Hmmm I never knew that at all. I'll have to try that in July this.

Pardom my ignorance of the US tax system, but why are taxes being done this time of year, James? Our financial year runs from 1st July - 30th June, so we start doing our Tax returns after the 1st July.

Ours runs the calendar year Jan 1 to Dec 31. The deadline for filing is April 15th.

What maulds said. We do our taxes for the previous year (jan 1 - dec 31, 2006) in 2007. Deadline to have them done and sent in (or postmarked by) is April 15th.

I might've been able to, but I had to wait until Feb 15th before I got my damn K1. For two bucks. Taxable income came to TWO DOLLARS on the K1...
