I'm reading a book on how we form our beliefs and came across an interesting riddle regarding the "Liar's Paradox"

Imagine you are walking down a path and you come to a fork in the road. There you meet two people and a sign that reads "One of these paths will lead to safety, but the other will lead to death. The two men in front of you both know which path is which. However, one person always lies, and the other always tells the truth. You may ask only one question in order to decide which path to take.

What question would you ask?

I'm interested to hearing your responses first before I go into discussion about it.

I heard a similar question to this once before, so I know the answer. I'll hold off until those of you who don't know get a chance to guess. It's pretty easy once you know the answer.

that would be 2 questions tho.

He said one Question.. It is one Question.. ONE question to each.. there was no specification of one question for Both :D

How would you know if the first one you asked was lying or telling the truth about lying though?

Its a Theoritical Question.. A liar will never admit to lying... So if the first sais he never lies, Hence he is the liar.

Just a few points to help you come to the result..

One question means one question. One question to the liar + one question to the truth teller = 2 questions

If the person you questioned tells you they never lie, then how do you know if it is the honest person, or, according your your correct philiosophy above, it is the liar merely lying?

Spoilsport:tongue: Sounded logical to me..

Lol, Honestly.. I know the Theory on it, and I have heard it reasoned out many times.. But I never got it myself, Because the non-liar would admit to a lie, simply because at some point he knows in his life he has lied. The liar will say No, Because he will not admit that he lies and to say yes would be an admission of Guilt.. mmmm Or something like that.. Like I say, I know the theory of it.. But I still never could fully comprehend it.

"If I asked him (the other one) which road was the right path, what would he say?"

Then take the opposite of what he tells you.

If you ask the liar, it means the other guy would be telling the truth. But the liar would tell you the opposite. If you ask the truth dude, he would know that the other guy would be tell you the wrong answer. So either way, take the opposite of what they say.
