Not a van man per say but there are days when I drive 200 to 300 miles so its about "being easy to drive"..I recently wore out a Mazda{265000} thousand miles..its still in the family and is driven daily it was a very easy car to drive was just time to move on.

They were huge in the 70s..it was common for a family to have several children then...while they are smaller now..most of the advancements in fuel mileage improvements have come through aerodynamics and more efficient engines.You Americans have big cars.
