I hate to have to restrict my friends from my newsfeed but occassionally I feel I have no choice. I have restricted friends who felt a need to post every cute thing they found on the internet. I have restricted friends whose political leanings were so radical I felt like I was in a political debate every time I opened facebook. Obnoxious fans of a certain team have succeeded in finding the corner as well. The latest is a longtime friend who has recently decided to catalog and post every picture he has ever taken starting with 40 years ago in groups of 25 to 50 at a time. These include every friend he has ever had and every experience along the way.

I actually just narrowed down my friends list. Everyone I have ever met in my life has added me at one point or another since facebook took off and I don't really need to keep up with hundreds of people at a time. I felt now was safe to lessen the number since they likely wouldn't miss me now that everyone and their dog is on there. So now I don't mind what I see so much. There is a couple who post every meal and every blink, or the ones that go on and on about their made up perfection or their terrible terrible lives.. but it's tolerable now.

I have to go through about once a month and clear out my newsfeed. I like seeing what people are up to, but I don't need to know about every sniffle you have, or see a picture each time your child takes a single step! Some people also find themselves booted off the island simply for having something negative to say every time they post!

I have considered going through my friends list and cleaning out people I either haven't interacted with in a while, or just don't care for their posts and see who notices.

Some people will announce before hand what they are doing, but I think it goes much further when you clean out your friends list and someone re-friends you.

I understand your point, and I have been found to block friends that simply hadn't anything worthy to post. The hard thing is managing people who both post obnoxious content and very relevant stuff - there is simply no way to sort through the rubbish. I have one "friend" (I say "friend" because Facebook kinda takes all the meaning out of the word - I don't even know this person that well) in my Facebook list who post a lot of insider information about academia, among a lot cutsey love-dovey stuff that just gets on my nerves. The info she posts is too valuable for me, so I just have to stick with the rest.
It's not a perfect system, but it's what we got. I don't think I can do without Facebook these days, quitting would be a bit like going back to not having a phone.

Where do they find the academia information you find valuable? If it is at another facebook page you can just like that page, or pages, and eliminate the need to keep them in your feed. I am sure there are other ways to find the information you are looking for.

I did end up restricting one of my face book friends because he kept posting disgusting videos he found like womens breasts bouncing or women's butts in yoga pants. They weren't naked or anything but it was still not of good taste. I don't get why he would do that because its basically like saying hes a pig and has nothing better to do with his time.

It is sad how some people just thrive off of your fb posts. Some people can be really nice always posting nice comments while others always have something negative to say. Personally I like friends who are just normal and like and comment when its really necessary to do so but if not then why bother!

Instead of Facebook,I use a SSH/dropbear powered text file-based content sharing system running on a cybernetic panda controlling a nuclear power plant. Only three people use it - there is no escape from the horror if you even try to do such douchebagerry.
