Ever notice how your dog will react differently to people based on how you approach them, or how those people approach you? It's almost like they're waiting for your input before fully trusting another individual.
That observed phenomenon is apparently a very real, measurable happening. In a thorough, methodological study, it was shown that dogs will make conscious decisions about the trustworthiness of another person based on the interactions perceived between two humans. This means that dogs are able to perform a rather complex mental process that involves calculating visual information and making a social decision based on the actions of another species. If you're interested in seeing the study, you can read it here: http://www.plosone.org/article/info...8;jsessionid=59C2B48058B214DBF652886EB2831960
As an armchair behaviorist myself, this information isn't surprising, since dogs have been shown to be keenly intelligent in ways most of the general public isn't even entirely aware, but it's awesome to see this kind of stuff be put out there!
