I still do not understand why there is a lack of central AC where I live (Oregon). Yes, it's cooler at night, but we are in the upper 80s right now and have no AC. It SUCKS! I open the windows and the neighbors downstairs are grilling and filling my apartment with smoke! I just want to whine basically because the heat is a huge reason why I moved away from the south. I do have a window unit but because we have horizontally sliding windows it is a pain in the ass and I have to have someone come install it for me.

I lived in Northern California for a few years without AC. We had a swamp cooler instead, and since the climate was dry it worked great. I don't think it would work well in the humidity of Oregon.

I am at least as far north as you are and could not do without a/c. I would do without something else first.

As a side note an AC works great in low humidity environments ...thus can get by with a smaller unit and stay frosty while keeping the monthly bills low.

Ultimately it comes down to building costs vs necessity.

I was away from North Carolina for about 20 years when I moved back in July and I didn't have AC for the car because I never needed AC in a car up north of the Mason Dixon line. I lasted about 1 week when I called my local dealer in Pa to have a car ready with AC lol

Yeah of course now it's back down in the 70s....but those few days of high 80s were so miserable. What makes it worse is the neighbor below us grilling and forcing us to be smoked out or close all the windows. Bleh

I hated it when I moved to the Pacific Northwest of Canada..

Everywhere here you cannot put an AC in the window of rented places unless they are built in, which most places do not have, or you can only have the in suite units that are removable. So I got a removable one that I move from room to room at Costco on sale..

Ok,
Most here will let you...however in apts and the sort they may not as water drips on the balconies etc.{would have to use in on the back side instead.}...but almost all have central air now.
But for the most part if you have a window ac..you can put it in...they even offer to help or do it for you to avoid scratching the window sill or tearing up the screen etc.

I did know some apt owners that insisted on the install themselves...as they had inside hallways rather than balcony...they didnt want an AC crashing several stories to the ground below...then then installed sash locks with a torx head as an effort to avoid tampering from within inside.

But yeah if I lived in a place that would not allow me to install a window unit..I am moving.
Luckily in America I wouldnt have to go far.
