Falling in love with old music after its time has passed...

I always do this. Somehow I'm not really good at following music, and most of the stuff I like isn't on the radio so I have no way to seek it out. But whenever I meet a person who has the same tastes as me I absorb everything they like like a sponge. Well, not everything, i do have my own opinions, but it usually seems that most of the stuff they like is congruent with what sounds good to me. Does anyone else do this? I feel retarded when it comes to finding new music myself! I just don't know how/where to look.

Ok the Doobie Brothers was my first concert ever....my dad loved them haha. And I do love that music because of the nostalgia....fleetwood Mac, heart, the eagles...and I loveeee pink Floyd.

I never consider that good music's time has ever "passed".

The one thing I use utube for is on the weekends to show my 7 year old boys great music from the past. Last night it was Bill Hailey (sp?) and the comets and the interesting fact that they never knew that Michael Jackson invented the moonwalk. My one son is now getting into Elvis Presley and the other into BB King.

One thing I never forgot growing up as a child is listening to my fathers "reel to reel" tapes, listening to big band music. I happen to liked the "Big band era" and never knew it was uncool to like older music.

However, I will agree with you about "finding" music. Couldn't believe I had missed Rage Against the Machine and the Offspring LMAO

pandora.com is tailor made for you. I just put in Portishead, for instance, because I've never heard of 'em. Pandora played a song by them, then automatically starts playing other artists of similar styles. It's a good way to find new sounds.

My music tastes have covered all styles over the years. Learned to love a lot of the 40's and 50's stuff from my mom always playing them. Growing up in the 60's left a taste for that as well as some heavy rock. Milking cows as a kid with gramps taught me country and I still like some for variety.

When I was in my teens I only ever listened to stuff that was new at the time... Blur, Oasis, the Verve, Radiohead and other bands like that. But once I hit my twenties I began branching out and discovering a lot of great music. Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Nick Drake and lots of others from the 60s and 70s now rank among my favourites.

I grew up listening to the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Elvis, REM, Stone Temple Pilots. Some of the songs by these bands are so cool to listen to even now in this whole new EDM age.

I also love old school music, even when it's not as popular as it was before, but the kind of old school music I love is still EDM: Jungle and Old School Hardcore.
I began liking Jungle because of the insane drum patterns without going extreme, along with the bassline (It's so delicious. How can we taste music anyway?), it just all goes together so well for me.
I started listening to Old School Hardcore because as I read the history of Jungle, I found out old school hardcore was its predecessor. I tried to listen to it and fell in love with it. I love every moment of it, the breaks, the basslines, the piano and other crazy stuff.

My taste in music is similar to Fred's but I have to add Joan Jett, Foreigner, The Cars, Pearl Jam, Tom Petty, earlier Bon Jovi and probably many more that I could include. But most especially, my man Bruce Springsteen.

Yeah, I was at a store once buying a Chicago album and the cashier was like "aren't they before your time?" What I should have said was "Chicago is timeless!" but I kind of just shrugged and left. I don't need to defend my taste in music, but if someone's honestly curious why I listen to older music it's because I really do think it's great and just as good as contemporary.
