My main computer needs a new power supply or at least a fan for it. You could smell it getting hot and I boosted it with a blast of canned air to get it going after cleaning the tower the other day. Next time I fired it up it did not stink but it sure ain't up to speed as the hard drive temp hit 115. So I fired up the old beast in the basement. Good god almighty. The last I fired it up and updated windows was Dec. of 2011. I have Netscape on it for the browser and email client. So spent the past 2 days trying to get it up to speed. The windows update gave me a fit till I turned off the windows firewall and automatic updates. Got 34 out of 40 installed and will look the others that did not load over to see if I really need them. Then Firefox, Thunderbird and migrate all the bookmarks and email addys etc. Quite a difference as this was a Win98 machine that I loaded XP Pro on in 2005. I think I bought it in 98 and did various upgrades and put a real nice cd burner in it. Back in the good old days of Napster. LOL.

I'm using WinNT and still making around the web as you can see.
Folks keep telling me to get rid of it for a new system.
I'll run this one to the ground.
I bought it used in 1991.

Did I mention how incredibly slow this fucking thing is? The flat keyboard is giving me finger cramps as well. My hands are used to the ergonomic MS one.

Between the USB1 wireless modem and this ancient processor it makes me want to fire up the one upstairs. I am worried about frying something else.

Remember when that was the norm? Turn on the computer. Go make a pot of coffee, use the bathroom, maybe take in a movie, then sit down to surf the web.

I remember going from dial up to a cable modem. God, I still hate that sound. Remember having to modify your config.sys to make changes on your machine? I used to know DOS and Unix pretty well. Going looking for a power supply tomorrow. Found some used ones online. If I am going to spend more than $50 I might get a new tower and load it with XP if the drivers are available.Don't like Win7.

I'd like to have that sound as a ring tone just to piss people off. :jk

Don't they have Win 8 now? All my current machines have XP except my beloved's laptop which has Vista.

Are towers even practical anymore?

Stay away from win8. Folks are screaming about it all the time. Seems every other system they roll out is a dud. I could stand win7 but they made settings etc. hard to find. My desktop is littered with shortcuts to system functions. I hate looking all over for stuff. I hate laptops and the damn finger pads. Run a wireless trackball on the wife's or I could not stand to use it.

I just upgraded from Vista ultimate to Win8 and it has taken some time to get acclimated with it LOL but the Os itself works fairly well.

People complained about Vista being a resource hog so I stuffed 16GB of Ram into my last PC and it worked like a champ! Still i wanted to upgrade as my hard disks started to take a shit - last week i bought 2 SSD (solid state drive) and a full copy of Win8 Pro and went to town saving pictures and important documents like text message transcripts and what not.

the upgrade itself was pretty fast and let me tell you it is a world of difference... I had the same problems others had, not being used to the interface and things not being in front of me like the power button LOL or the missing START button were a problem but even then after about a week of using it I can say that I am definitely glad i upgraded! the system even recognized all my attached after market HW like video cards and input devices and went and got the latest drivers for me - so when it came back up everything was up to date and ready to go! No more searching for compatible drivers after an upgrade LOL

I run a dual monitor display so the new gay ass metro display is a bit disappointing since it only uses one display but aside from that i am quickly getting used to it.

Win8 is not as bad as everyone claims it to be.
