Here where I am at they maintain the roads less each year. First hit of the season we get about 3 to 4 inches of snow. The main highways are easily driven off by the traffic..however the secondary highways with less traffic get packed down to ice after a few vehicles pass ..but not enough traffic to thaw the ice and snow.
Several years ago they plowed the snow and put down salt or sand in the bad areas {bridges and steep hills}....helping alot.
Now passes are few and the blade isn't contacting the ground when passes are made...just lowered to contact some snow.
I have seen passes with the blade up...one occurring today...when the road is treacherous.
Now I understand each one has an area to plow...but should one return to town without plowing on the way when the road is in bad need?
As said it gets worse every year..not just this road but many roads and many counties.
Some excuses have entailed "employees couldn't make it to work"...That doesnt work for convenience stores banks etc...Why should it work for someones job whose is to clean the road.
If they dont have a 4 wheel drive then stay at the state "barn" until the snow hits..or take the damn state truck home home.
They used to start cleaning the roads in the middle of the night...but now its when the day starts and as said it just isnt getting done.
My road has two ways out,,,one is suicide the other will make you shit your pants.
The suicide way out has many areas with about 30 foot ditches..almost as steep as a cliff very hilly and curvy....no shoulders
The other way out is about a third as bad{ no shoulders either}..but is still no pleasure cruise as you will be going down hills on curves and meet bridges {someones wise idea of bridge replacement making a temp route the permanent route}...problem they closed the original route while building new bridges!
Then remove the old bridge...why not remove the old bridge then put in the new at said location if you are not going to allow traffic on the old bridge anyway during construction anyway !!
many people have hit the bridge butt head on or went to the water below.,,,as said that is the good way out...the other way out is filled with very bad places
Taxes keep going up and service keeps going down every year with snow plowing.
Is it just my state or has anyone else been having the same issue with lack of service.
All these new trucks sitting most of the time pisses me off anyway..its a major investment...casual use does not require new trucks.
Fuck you can put about 800 thousand miles on one of em...they sure arent wearing em out if they are sitting all the time.

Same with the new high dollar tractors for mowing the ditches....just hasnt been getting done.
Who would buy new and bigger john deers tractors to mow steep ditches rather than a smaller case which handles the inclines so much better !...its no wonder they arent getting mowed!
So we have tractors we cant use and spent more for em...you dont need huge tractors to mow ditches...you want the smaller tractor..and you want a case.

All my tax money has went to equipment that isnt being used...but it sure is nice equipment.
Has anyone else been noticing lots of new equipment but less service of roads and ditches.
Equipment picked out by college boys I might add as well lol

we don't deal with snow often. With the tight economy I have noticed less mowing going on in the warmer months.

It does sound like your snow removal service is lacking. Do they not realize the importance of keeping roads clear as possible? Could be life or death. Emergency services need roads to get to folks who need help.

We have criticized our city's snow removal, in the past, but I came to realize that we can, usually, get to where we need to go, not necessarily where we want to.

Have you gone to your county commission meetings and spoken your piece??

Appears as if some states have been cutting back and others havent.
I dont go to any of the meetings.
I think all the money is going to "war on crime"...then with all the new other equipment perhaps they dont want to pay comp time

Our road crews do a great job around here. They start at 4 am and have roads plowed and sanded before folks head out to work or the buses leave the barn. We pay through the ass in taxes but the service is good. It helps that most of the road crew is in the fire dept. or on the school board. They know where the bad spots are and sand them hard. The only time it gets bad is when it drifts.

We have gotten several inches of snow today and they have not been by once.
Pussies.
We live on a fucking highway{secondary} for petes sake
It was slick when I had to come back from town early this morning..was about an inch of accumulation or so..with they snow on the slick surface underneath hundreds are trapped.
They need to chain up and plow the road...they are starting to piss me off.
Dont take the job if you are not willing to do it...you cant stand with your thumb up your ass all year...now you get to actually earn your money.
I would fire half the fuckers if it was my call.

Around here the state guys go to staggered shifts to get good coverage and the town and county are always out hitting the bad areas before the school bus runs start. Worst we have is one steep hill where it blows across a lot. If it really dumps it may be a few hours till they hit all roads one pass and then work their way around going the opposite direction.

We used to get excellent service as well..but now {at least in my area} no one wants to take the work that goes along with driving a truck.

Such as busting that stuff up that freezes in the bed.
Changing or welding up worn blades.
Putting on chains if need be.
Releasing the brakes and putting the truck in gear :p
Accelerate and shift

Or hell even driving to work.

You can bet that Jeff city {capital} is spotless...they can miss a mile marker by 3 inches doing about 45 mph....real men.

Was spotless last snow when I drove through there.

Which is what I have been telling you and Caveman for years now. That war on crime is just a war on drugs.

You are smart enough to know how the system works TM. They start cutting back on stuff that is important to save their pet projects. They want you to bitch and moan so they can tug on your wallet to raise taxes. It is the same bullshit as when money gets low the cities say they will have to cut back on police and fire.

Yeah they have gone crazy on drug cases.
I like the excuse they have on raising taxes... they say everything has went up so they need more money....the fact that everything has went up already gives em more money as we pay more for what we buy..and as houses get bigger they get more taxes as well.

Our snow removers do a pretty good job. I live on hills and have only had one bad day getting home. Everyone was driving at a crawl, the snow fell so fast and the winds were high, and the wet street had frozen underneath. Parts of the road you had traction, and other parts were icy.
